was walking up n down the pet food isle trying to find some food that my 2 would eat, not turn up their noses at. and started chatting to this woman who was stock taking the whiskers area, i said that the cat food companys should sell the gravy or jelly that goes around the food. as my 2 will always eat all the stuff around the food then leave the food, and call it fussy f**kers (u get my drift lol) and after discussing it she says its a good idea and shes going to suggest to the company, so i gave her my name and said i should patent the idea lol well if it arrives on the shelves U HEARD IT FIRST HERE :-D

Boysmum, you may have missed the fact that Angie and I have been commenting regularly about this; the cat food companies would grearly inrease profits if they'd sell the gravy only! ALL mine over the years eat it first.

Maybe someone should start a petition, doubt if it would do any good, though....

Ours wont eat the gravy. Amber eats it all, Tim eats the jelly first and leaves the meat as dry as the day it was cooked :) I notice that little Mindy is a jelly gobbler as well :)

My daughter works as a unit specialist with the cats for Waltham Pet Nutrition where whiskas, Sheba, etc are tested on the cats. They are actually given various jellies first before they add the meat, most turn their noses up at just being given jelly! Part of my daughters job is making up the jelly! They are given the meat later on in the day as they wouldn't be able to give them just jelly all the time as this wouldn't contain all the nutrients they need. It takes a long time and a lot of taste trials, weighing the cats, monitoring their health, giving them choices etc, before a new product finally gets on the shelves. There are 300 cats there and the best looked after cats I have ever seen!

My girl eats licks all the gravy off and then my boy comes and finished the chunks, it's a setup that seems to work well for them, and nothing gets wasted. :)

I am glad they are looked after Kim, my sis refuses to buy the big names due to the fact that they are tested on animals, (obviously!)..and what is purported to be in them.
I can't comment on any of this myself as I haven't done the research so am totally oblivious,..but it's good to hear these cats are treated well. Do you know what happens to them when they are retired Kim..?

Ok, I know I am not Kim and correct me if I am wrong but I once read about waltham center (they have it for dogs too) and I think animals are there for the rest of their lives - they make senior food too and I presume they also want seniors there? (Cause I know they also have pregnant and nursing cats and kittens)

Waltham Pet Nutrition do not actually 'test' on the animals, they just do taste trials and the most invasive thing they do are skin scrapes. They are very open to what they do which is why most of the units are glass and they have open days.

They have vets on site and if a cat as much as coughs the vet is called! Cats are retired aged 8 and all re-homed, mainly to staff! Cats health is monitored carefully, they are weighed weekly, weekly health checks carried out. Cleanliness is paramount and all staff have to 'shower on' to the unit. They have an abundance of toys and much time is spent socialising and fussing them. Dogs have a great life too, there is plenty of space for free running and they are trained well and socialised. After what I now know I wouldn't hesitate to buy these brands. :)

That is really reassuring to know Kim. Thanks for the info - those animals sound as if they get the best and the fact that they are rehomed to staff is in itself a guarantee that they have been well cared for.

oh so they are re homed?
Just a quick Q - do they monitor their health etc when they are not in the facility anymore? I am just curious you know as to how they monitor whether the food is ok for senior cats/dogs (teeth etc)? Are they also fed this food at their new homes?

By the way I also buy their food some times for dogs and cats.

Glad to hear that Kim, but there are only so many staff.. I do hope that's the case. I'll relay that info to my sis. Perhaps her cats will now have a choice of food!

I've been around the Waltham site and the cattery area is fab! They have so much space, lots of climbing opportunities and look-out points, they really did look happy cats :-)

No cat is ever pts unless it is ill. Some cats are re-homed younger than 8 if necessary for any reason. Most staff re-home several cats and at present the cats that are due to retire have homes lined up, the one my daughter wants who retires in January already has 2 people who want him! ;)

Sorry for the delay in replying, I was going to get my daughter to reply, but she is on holiday now, so I will reply the best I can.

Their health is not monitored once they leave Waltham, they are not on food trials all the time anyway; the cats take it in turns and they are on a trial for a limited time, They have done food trials on seniors there, but not currently. Most of the food trials on seniors is currently done at the Royal Canin site in The South of France. They are given some food to go to their new homes with, but like most cats who are re-homed it is then up to their new owner to feed their own choice of food. :)
