Sigh.......Well I might be involved in a rescue of sorts today. I know CL is evil but I frequent it regularly...and today I saw an ad that said the following : "My husband rescued this feret from being drowned by it's owners. We know nothing about ferets, i am pregnant and can't take care of it, and my mother-in-law is allergic so this little guy needs a new home. Comes with three story cage, food bowl, and water bottle. I don't know how old it is but it is a small feret and i'm told it will stay that way. It is friendly and likes to play with people. Needs a new home asap."
So I call them and the mother in law answers the phone. Tells me they need this ferret OUT asap, her son brought it home but she cannot stand them and she won't allow it in the house. Someone was supposed to come by this afternoon and pick it up but she is skeptical because people off CL can be so flaky and she doesn't want any harm to come to him but they disgust her and they will have to set him outside if this person does not show up. I told her WAIT. If they don't show up STOP and call me FIRST. They thanked me and seemed a little surprised someone would feel so strongly about ferrets.
So I've done my part, if they don't call then I am going to assume he's safe in a new home and if they do call I will just get him and figure out the rest later. This area they are in is pretty remote, our friend lives there, and there are tons of coyotes and I don't really need another ferret but anything would be better than them setting him loose out there.
Sighhhh..we'll see what happens.

Well done Tink.
I can be very hard to wait but you have done all you can and hopefully the ferret will find a good home ( especially with you.:D ).
Sometime you have to let your heart rule you head- just be careful or you may end up as a ferret rescue centre.

Is this where unwanted pets are advertised?

Tink
12-06-2010, 11:07 PM
Well alot of things are advertised...pets, appliances, rentals, community events, you name it. It's kind of like a free classified that can be updated constantly online..you also find out alot about your community if you check your local craigslist.

Tink, I feel you! I'm forever rescuing small furries off of CL. Just pulled a bunny and a couple of prairie dogs and found them good homes. I try to stay away but somehow I always end up on that site!

So - do tell, you can't just let it hang like that!

Glad the other guy got a good home. I'd have to stay off CL I'd end up with every room packed full of rescues.

So this is the story..
A person south of me decided it would be "fun" to put an intact male and female together and see what would happen. Well you don't have to be a genius to figure this one out. There was a litter. They decided to keep one kit of the litter (the little girl I got tonight). Had her for almost her first year constantly caged, no playtime. The "breeder" or whatever you want to call hers friend took pity on this ferret and took her in and moved north to a city near where I live. So this friend has her a month. Says she is very allergic to her. Also says her kids don't like her like she anticipated she would. Needs her out ASAP. She will basically give her to me she just wants her to go to a home where she can be let out of her cage. Also says she is a "special case" behaviorally because she throws tantrums in her cage (hmm i wonder why?? sigh...). Has been bathing her once a week, never has trimmed her nails...EVER...and she's on nasty Marshall's food.
When I showed up it was totally dark and the woman just met me out in her front yard and placed everything in my arms and was just talking really fast like she just wanted me to go. I didn't even see what I was getting I just took the carrier from her and left. And there was not good lighting the whole way home so I kind of just blindly took this ferret..crazy, right?
So I get her home and first order of business is take her in a secluded room and see exactly what we are dealing with here. She's a sweetie. She just wanted so bad to run and play that I didn't put it off too long before I just let her finally get the crazies out of her system. She war danced and dooked for three hours before I put her to bed in her cage, I wanted to make sure she had an adequate run before caging her.
I will try to get better pics of her later, she doesn't sit still. We are still deciding on name. Considering the name Pino. We will see if it sticks.

Pino is getting an ultra sound this afternoon to make sure she is in fact spayed. Her previous owner all of a sudden stopped all correspondence with me once I asked for info so I could pull her previous vet records. Not surprised really. Fingers crossed this little girl is fixed!

Hi there, we are all home now (Lainey had to get a rabies vaccine too and one of our dogs needed exam and vax too). Anyway....
I guess there was a miscommunication between me and the tech that set up the ultra sound. I was under the impression it was ultra sound, she was under the impression we were just shaving Pino's belly and looking for a spay scar. So we did the latter and the tech was not sure so we waited for my super smart vet to check as well as palpate becuase Pino needed an exam anyway to make sure she is otherwise a healthy little girl.
Well we made some interesting findings. I tell you I do not know what is the truth now about this little girl. We found a tatt on her ear. Doesn't seem like a BYB's style to tattoo, I'm really confused now. That doesn't seem to match up. We could not see a spay scar but also unable to palpate the uterus so it is one of two things
1) she was born in more of a mill type environment than it sounded and was in fact altered early at such a young age we are not able to see the scar
2) she is in fact not fixed
So I asked how about an ultra sound and my vet is super nice and always trying to save me money because she sees all our animals and she told me we COULD schedule one but that's several hundred dollars. If it was her in this situation what she would end up doing is one of two things..being..
1) schedule her for a spay (works out cheaper and if they see nothing well they close her right back up)
2) watch her vulva carefully and see if she shows any kind of indication of going into heat (vulva swelling)
I chose option 2 because I'd really hate to open Pino up for no "for sure" reason. But we are going to be very, very careful. I mean any slight thing indicating she's going into heat and she is getting spayed, my vet says at her age it would not be a matter of getting her a jill jab, might as well just fix her if/when it happens.
Everything else checked out great. She is a healthy two pounds. I got her microchipped so she is mine forever and ever, lol.
So that's that, gonna go the wait and see route as me and the vet are both the type that don't want to do anything invasive if not necessary...
So honestly I don't know WHAT is the truth about Pino now except I love her very much and she's found her forever home :D

She does look like a poppet Tink. Glad you've sorted out her claws/nails. Hope you don't have to get her spayed later and that it does turn out that she's been "done".

What a lucky girlie she is to have found you!

I agree, she's a lucky little girl! I do hope she's been spayed; lets cross fingers that no signs appear. How often do ferrets come in heat?

On an alcoholic note, Pinot Grigio is currently my favourite wine! So I approved totally of her name!

Tink,
i know you have had problems with her previous owner not communicating with you but do you think there is any mileage texting, phoning, whatever and saying that you have her scheduled for a spay and just wanted to check she hasn't been done?

it's certainly worth a try. she's not answering any of my text or email anymore once i brought up requesting vet records. she just said she "didn't know" where she was seen and then i asked her for her first and last name and i would just go through the yellow pages of all the vets from where she used to live to figure it out..thought that would be easiest on her if she didn't truly remember. how hard is it to give me your first and last name but she never responded anymore after that:roll: but i could give your suggestion a try:D wow, thank goodness Pino is out of there the previous owner seems more questionable by the moment.
