I have NO idea, but from memory when OH's daughter did this 3 years ago it was a pricey exercise

A quick look brought up this site which isn't too badly priced to be honest http://www.beflirtydresses.com/acatalog/Prom-Dresses.html. Also factor in the handbag, shoes, hair, make up, transport (OH's daughter had a friend whose old man had a helicopter so they arranged to land on the school field  ).

Not suggesting for a moment though that you rent something that flies but a limo contribution will probably be required

I would suggest ebay. What sort of price, colour, size are you looking for?

I know of a company that makes prom dresses (not in the UK) and they are very cheap but they also make wedding dresses and are quite busy, what is your timescale?? They do make bespoke dresses.

My sister got prom dress from Debenhams, not too dear if I remember.

However, she later sold it on ebay for a fraction of the cost and said she wished she had thought about buying it there as most of the time they are only worn once.

loads of Debehams "Debut" prom dresses on ebay. You could always buy one on there and add some more sparkle etc to it.

I am having a nightmare looking online for dresses. Emma has seen one that costs £225 and has stuck at that one. Everything else I show her she hates!! Lots of thinking to be done...

Hi Donna,

The link is http://www.millybridal.co.uk/

(They are based in China)

A lot of brides on a wedding forum are using them to make their dresses and there is a lot of good feedback of their work

Wedding thread is here

http://www.youandyourwedding.co.uk/chatroom/topic/238803

If you send them a link/picture of that dress they should be able to give you a quote and let you know if they can make a similar dress. The dress will be unique. The bridal dresses are coming out around a third to a quarter cheaper than the bridal shops, they also do prom dresses and are very experienced.

When does Emma need the dress by?

Donna!!! have a look at this dress on ebay - very similar and a size 8, Emma could always make the dress a bit fuller by wearing a netted skirt underneath

We did see this one earlier.... as I was searching.... she didnt seem that impressed... I am sure it would look better on a model in a photo rather than as it is.... she is so hard to please..

Some of the bridal shops that sell the prom dresses get them made in China and then alter them inhouse.

When does Emma need the dress by?

I emailed these people for a quote and the response is:

The answer is yes we are able to make prom gowns and could have this gown to you within 6 weeks if ordered.

The gown from the link supplied would be £100 with free postage

Now just deciding whether its worth the risk getting them to make it, just in case it is not exactly what Emma wants... but it is a lot cheaper than £225!!

All I know is these Prom things are a major event now and any hitch in the dress appearsa to cause heartbreak what does Emma say??

EmmaG
11-03-2010, 08:04 PM
I think I would agree with Kazz - see if Emma is happy to take the risk. If you do decide to get Milly to make the dress just make sure you measure and remeasure Emma as they will make the dress to fit her, not to a standard size. So far the reports I have heard are that the dresses are good value and well made for the price. And I think they will send you pictures of the dress being made so you can change anything you do not like.
