View Full Version : Pip has hurt his leg

Pip seems to have hurt his right foreleg. He is limping and not weight bearing on it. There is no external injury, so he may have sprained it or twisted it awkwardly. I have felt around his little joints and he shows no pain.

Obviously I will phone the vet tomorrow morning, but is there anything I can do in the meantime? Any advise welcome. Thanks.

Its a kitten thing I swear they jump about like crazy I would try trying to keep him from jumping about (hard I know) he has not by any chance got anything in his paw has he?

No good with things like this I am sorry vets would be my first visit too.

He seems to be sensibly resting atm Kazz. I have had a look around his paw but I can't see anything there. He let me poke about around his pads without showing any pain.

Hopefully he will be right as rain by morning - I would go to vets if not.

Hope Pip gets well soon!

Hopefully he has just given himself a wee strain...
Like Kazz says, just try and get him to rest it, nothing really more you can do...
Maybe by tomorrow he will be able to put his weight on it again.

Sounds like he has maybe come down on it hard....Typical kitten! Hopfully it will be ok by morning....Is he reacting at all when you feel it??

No, I've felt all around his leg and under his paw Moli and he doesn't seem to be feeling any pain

It's such a very small leg ............

If he starts getting too lively it may be a good idea to put him in his cage for a while in case he does more damage to it.

After a night's rest he will hopefully be better tomorrow...

He'll live.....Angie you are becoming a worrybutt.....;) I understand why they are soo small and delicate but he'll be fine I remember Oz jumpping from the back window when I was in the flat when he was about 4 months old....I was in the garden and he just somehow got through the back bedroom window (I lived in a first floor converted house flat) he just jumped froze.....then pottered off and spent all day shaking himself (like he had jarred all his bones) Idiot cat ....he never learned your Pip sounds the same

I am a worrybutt! But he looks so sad and vulnerable, limping.

Sympathy from a fellow worrybutt! They seem so small and fragile and look so sad when they're hurting....... even though they're really as tough as old boots! Dandy fell out of a tree when he was a small kitten and I was fit to be tied!! After vet hours, of course. But he was absolutely fine, I was the one who needed a doctor for my nerves! (G & T helped...)

Hopefully it's a something or nothing and Pip is much better after a good sleep. He's probably never felt pain before, so no wonder he's making a fuss.
(it's so easy not to be a worrywort when it's not your puss who's hurting  )

He's still limping this morning. I am sad because first thing in the morning is when he's been like a dervish and we play mice under the bed clothes - although he has been pouncing, I've tried not to wriggle my toes too much! Have made an appointment for the vet at 11.50 We have to go to the main clinic about 10 miles away, but I'd rather someone who knows tell me that no bones are out of place. I am hoping it's just a little strain or sprain. I'll let you all know as soon as I get home.

Just to let you know - the visit was inconclusive. Pip MAY have a fracture of his knee, there is a small swelling but he wasn't letting on to the vet if anything hurt. We just have to see if he improves - if his limping gets worse or hasn't improved by Friday, we have to take him back. Because it could be in a place where the growth plates are any fracture could potentially be a nightmare - nothing would show on an X-ray and a specialist would be needed. :(

The vet said she always takes signs of limping very seriously in such young animals, so reassured us we were not being unnecessarily anxious.

Please will everyone keep their fingers crossed that he improves on his own? He is being a very good kitten and is resting in his crate atm.

Fingers crossed here too - and apologies for minimising it earlier.

Angie - you have got insurance, haven't you?

angieh

Yes, DM - took it out last Friday when I took Pip to register etc. Of course, today's visit isn't covered but if things progress it will be taken into account.

Poor little chap, I hope it starts to improve soon.

I wonder how he did it....any ideas Angie?:?

angieh

Absolutely none Mags ........ he really was in "dervish mode" yesterday morning and then flaked out. I put him in his crate while I was doing some work and OH was out with MIL - he curled up and went to sleep. Then after he woke and I let him run around, he still seemed sleepy, so as MIL had come back and was in her armchair Pip went in to sleep with her. Later in the afternoon, she came into the lounge without her walker clutching little Pip. Did she clutch too hard???? Had she struggled to get up and staggered against something whilst hanging on to Pip?? We will never know I guess ........ she has no idea and it's pointless really wondering if she did anything, it would never have been a deliberate thing. It was after that that we noticed he was holding his paw up off the ground.

Ohh I am sorry Angie I was hoping it was justa kitten thing....sorry to have been a bit "off hand about it in earlier posts"

Sometimes I can be a bit of a knuckle head.

Hope its nothing to bad and simply a sprain. Karen

I'll just add in, as I've often said when talking of vets' initial diagnosis/prognosis, they tend to start at 'worst case' and row back from it as and when the position becomes clearer. I must ask Lucy about that next time I see her if they are taught to do things that way. You can see that it makes sense in many ways, (she's about to start her final year .... it only seems five minutes ago I was proudly telling you of my niece goint to vet school)

Winston fractured his hind leg at the age of 8 weeks, a wee pain killer and some rest and he was absolutely fine. A little knock kneed but went on for a million years of fun and frolics.
I'm sure Pip is just as resiliant as the old boy was.

Thanks for all your support and healing vibes. They have worked as little Pip is back to his normal self this morning. No limp to be seen, running around as normal. He also seems much perkier and full of kitten-ness!

They do get us worried, don't they?
