helpppppp i have a british blue and all of a sudden he has started to poop on the carpet ..he has a cat litter tray that he has used since we got him... and its always kept clean for him....he will use his tray to pee but all of a sudden regarding poops he does it on the carpet its driving me mad............never had this before with any cat i have had...:( :( :( :( :( i do get rid of the scent ..... but he still goes to this place im at my wits end ....:roll: :roll: :roll:

Sorry to hear of your problems, how old is he? does he need to be seen by a vet? has anything changed in his environment? (new pet/children etc)

You might have to change the carpet even if you have cleaned it if it still has his scent on it. Have you tried a specialist cleaner to remove any scent?

If there is nothing wrong with him physically then it might be an idea to get another litter box. Many cats dont like to pee and poop in the same tray.
I sympathise with you, I have one who has been pooping on the floor for the last few years but thats a long and drawn out story and it's not the norm'.

Has the litter type beenchanged or the environment roun dhis box?

That too can sometimes upset them.

Welcome, I hope you can sort the pooping issue as it's quite annoying - I know, my oldest cat did it a lot when he was younger. My suggestion would be to place a second litter tray on the spot where you cat poops. Hopefully he might realise that he should start using the tray again.

It is unusual for a cat to suddenly start doing this when a litter tray was previously used without a problem. It seems to me as if there might be something underlying this - and it might not be anything tangible to you. For instance, a new cat that might be bullying yours (if he's an outside cat), different household cleaners generally or specifically those that are used for the litter tray - I could go on!

I agree with what yola has said, but I would also take him to the vet as it could be a sign of an underlying problem.

I have found that a good old fashioned scrub with some diluted biological washing powder (I have a scrubbing brush for this purpose) more effective (and also cheaper) than specialist pet cleaners. You say you get rid of it, but you do not say what with. You could be making the problem worse, as a lot of cleaners contain ammonia, which urine is the main component of. So to you, the area smells clean, but to your cat, it smells of wee, and therefore he thinks it is ok to continue to urinate there.

Do you recall if he was at all constipated before this started happening? If he had a painful time evacuating his bowel he well may associate the litter box with the discomfort .......

Thanks for the reply....hes 14 months old now, i havent actually taken him to the vet yet ...as he is otherwise himself....
i Hvae used the proper cleaning stuff to get rid of the scent ...

I have tried another litter tray....but he just pees in that too....and still have the problem of not using his tray for the other .....

he has never actuallt done a pee on the carpet its the other hes doing i cant understand ....he has had the same litter....hes always had..its just odd...maybe need to see the vet .....

HI is the litter tray in a quiet private spot. most cats dont like to be seen whilst having a poo. Mine when she had one would quite happily use the tray facing out for a pee, but would always face the wall to poo, a bit like if i cant see you you cant see me.

How far from the tray is he pooing? One of mine specialises in having her bum hanging out so SHE is in the litter tray but the results aren't! I ended up with a lot of newspaper in front of the tray. She alsways pees inside and means well!

Ok I think my Kendra has read your post, after my replying to it yesterday she has done exactly the same thing. Now I know why she jumps up to me when Im using the computer.
