I'd like to introduce you all to Z! He was brought into the practice to be PTS on Monday, aged 6 because 'he's crippled with arthritis and smells of wee'
The vet refused to put him to sleep after seeing him so he has been signed over to us. He's a lovely dog, full of energy just slightly overweight (he needs to lose about 12kg! but we have him on a diet and lots of exercise.

Pleeeeease throw it!

Typical lab, head in the water, bum in the air! ;)

He loves to swim though and it's great, low impact exercise

He's a real sweetheart, I'd take him on in a heartbeat if we had a garden. We're looking for a home for him but for now everyone is taking it in turns to take him out for walks etc, luckliy we have such nice walks around here. He is completely housetrained BTW, asks to go out, totally clean.

I keep saying ........... there is only one bad animal species on this planet and it certainly isn't that lovely dog. So glad your practice has taken him in, sure you'll find a loving home for him soon.

He certainly could do with losing some of that weight, 12 kgs overweight!?? Did his owners never exercise him? No wonder he's arthritic! Poor love!

I don't think he has been walked regularly for a very long time, although he is fairly well trained-pulls a bit on the lead but has a great recall and knows sit and down. He's such a happy dog, still can't believe the owners 'wanted rid' of him-they hadn't even considered rehoming him
Just waiting for the rain to ease off a bit before taking him out for a last wee!

well done your vets. It must be so hard when so many animals come in to be PTS, and the vets are stuck with no options. He looks a bit big, but we took in a collie/ alsation cross and she was 10kgs overweight, she was 11 but we got the weight off slowly and she was so much happier. If he does have arthritis, losing weight will be such a big benefit for him, and he can start to live life like a lab should!

I can't understand people who put down a pet they have had for years because it is inconvenient, I fight until the very last, perhaps that is my biggest problem, sometimes I don't know when to give up, and the vet has to tell me.:(

I'm in charge of the pet 'weight watchers' in our practice so I've devised a weight loss plan for him-just got to make sure everyone sticks to it ;) Hopefully he can be an example to our other clients of what can be done.

He's beautiful.

I've just taken over the doggy weight watchers at work as the girl who looks after the health & welfare issues including fat-club has gone on maternity leave. I'd be interested to know more about what sort of things you do with your "larger-clients" :-D

I'm also on an obedity project group as weight is a big subject (no pun intended )at the mo for us & a big project to drive home the importance of it.

Good luck to Z on his weight shedding and new (decent) people acquiring project. I don't think the latter will take him too long

Thank heaven he came to your practice and not one where maybe the time wasn't there to carefully analyse his needs.

Bless you all for taking him on, it sounds like he's making great progress already and the pox on the people who wanted to end his life just for their own convenience

He's doing very well on his diet and increased exercise-as well as being on a drug to aid weightloss and has lost nearly 2kg so far!

Ideally he needs to lose about another 10kg Angie, obviously we'll tailor it to his body shape as he starts to get lighter but he's a fairly fine built lab so should be around the 30kg mark. Slow and steady is best though so we're getting there and there's no shortage of people willing to walk and play with him :-D

Any offers of a good new home for him? Please give him a cuddle from me - I know what it's like trying to lose weight, and he's doing better than me!

I think that one of our vets might keep Z, he has been going home with her most nights and she's really fallen in love with him! She travels quite a bit so I'll be looking after him when she's away!
