Bad News..

My OH needs heart surgery. He is meeting with the surgeon next week.:cry:

Oh, I'm so sorry to hesr this, Tink. But they can work marvels with heart surgery these days; three of my guy friends have had it and are doing fine. (((hugs))), prayers coming and do please let us know what's happening..

Thank you. He had a CT scan this morning and as soon as the doc got a chance to look at it our phone was ringing off the hook. They immediately setup an appointment with the best cardiac surgeon in the area because he needs surgery ASAP and it is very risky for him to be walking around (and working!) in this condition.
I will be attending the surgeon appointment. I have my own questions, especially regarding his care after he is released home. Fingers crossed there is a near surgery date in our future. On the other hand, I'm terrified. His jugular has already collapsed and died on one side of his neck due to a blood clot and he has very bad asthma. I get nervous thinking about him under anesthesia.

You are right to be concerned Tink... but in a way... its good that he has had these problems identified... because when they do his surgery plan with all the other doctors they will have contingency plans for any problems that might arise on the basis of his medical history...
When you go to the surgeons appointment... dont be afraid to ask questions... ask for the spelling of words /procedures and ask him to re explain anything that you dont understand...... make notes of the questions that you want to ask... and also take notes of the answers that you are given... ask the doctor if he has any information sheets for you... some specialists have a prepared information sheet for some procedures.. he may not... but it never hurts to ask..
As DM said above...heat surgery now has a very very high sucess rate... it's good that youa re taking an interest in your OH's procedures... some people just let the docs do what they want without asking questions... im a firm believer in healthcare being team effort...Doctors, patient and home caregiver all working together...(lol especially when the patient is a male....cause they are such bad patients most of the time!)

That is brilliant advice from Jo, Tink I couldn`t have said it better, I know it is hard not to worry I would be totaly the same if it was my OH but please try not to worry to much as you will need to be strong for him because you know what men are like they always act big and tough but they are not really;) .

You must be beside yourself with worry, I can sympathise. However as Jo said, your OH really is in the best place with professionals looking after him. THey will be aware of his health issues and will be able to factor these in. Of course no operation is risk free but once out the other side he will have a renewed quality of life which has to be a good thing.

The main thing is to be informed and get as much background info on the before, during and after needs of your OH.

I can only add to what all have said about the enormous advances in coronary care and the amazing things it's possible to do now. The most incredible procedures are almost 'commonplace'.
Take on board the advice - look after yourself and don't get stressed - the calmer and more 'normal' you are, the better.

My thoughts are with you both Tink, I know it's very worrying for you but try to be brave, they are experts in coronary care these days and I'm sure they will look after K very well and return him to you a much fitter man.

Try not to worry Tink, it is amazing what they can do, one lady I work with - her husband had a heart transplant on Xmas Day and he is doing very well.
