It's the 30th year for the RSPB's Big Garden Birdwatch this weekend. A really good time to get your family interested in the birds in your garden or local park.

Do take part if you can - it's such a good indicator of how local populations are doing.

So thatwas what Bentley was doing this morning, looking out of the window and going "week week, mrarp" :D

Yes - do do it, unless you are phobic. The information is very useful to the RSPB

That's a shame Eileen. I'm an RSPB member, so get reminded in our quarterly magazine. I'm sure there is RSPB equivalent in USA - sorry, don't know it's name - ASPB, perhaps?

Thanks for that Angie - I always seem to find about it too late.

No excuses this time. I'll definately join in. Do you know I have not seen a sparrow here for around 5 years   it is really strange how they've gone right done in population isn't it?

Yes, certainly the urban populations have plummeted. We are lucky here and have a nice little flock - it's such a shame and something we all took for granted.

Sad to hear that it's a similar situation where you are right out in the countryside.

We have the Audubon Society, Angie. Ever since West Nile virus entered the country, our crow and blue jay population, at least here in the City, has plummeted; used to see them all the time, and very rare now. But peregrines and bald eagles have increased marvelously!

Not unusual for here, no. We had snow overnight and quite a frosty start, although sunny. So, I think there were prob more concentrated over the hourthan I would have expected.

I had the usual tits and finches, Robins, a dunnock, Blackbirds, thrush, magpie, pheasant, magpies, a woodpecker and a buzzard. So quite a lot really.

We had a pair of Kestrals playing chase in the next field but they were never still or near enough to count.

What about your count?

I had the usual great tits, blue tits, long-tailed tits, greenfinch, chaffinch, blackbird, robin, collar doves, woodpigeon, dunnock, magpie, jackdaws and lesser spotted woodpecker. I envy you your thrush - we rarely see them here although I did think we had a mistlethrush before Christmas. Saw a kestrel today, but of course that didn't count!
