Went to garden centre yesterday and bought 3 mystery plants. This is a plant that has lost its label and the centre sell off cheaply rather than wait until next time it grows.

So, I paid 99p each for a -

clematis
pot of bulbs
herbacious/border plant

At that price if they don't survive it's not the end of the world.

I do this every year and have had a few surprises. Most of them grow so it is quite good to play - guess the plant when they sprout.

hope so. Have to admit any time I've bought a pot of bulbs they end up to be daffs. Never mind, they fill a space.

You can never get enough daffs......I enjoy buying "surprises" from the garden centre.

That's going to be fun seeing what they are. Hope the clematis turns out to be the gorgeous purple one, but they're all lovely. They don't do well for me...:(. Neighbor across the alley has a stunning one. No such thing as too many daffodils, as Kazz said. Maybe a pic of the other when it starts growing so we can guess?

Hope they don't disappoint you

Good idea - will do.

I'll maybe post the clematis if/when it comes into flower and see if anyone can name it. I would like a purple or pink one. Garden tends to have mainly these colours.

Just noticed today the snowdrops are making their way up through the frozen ground.

No signs of my snowdrops, but a bud appearing on one hellebore!

No way! Is that not quite early?

Yes, quite. I was surprised, especially as this Winter has been harsher than last. No snow so far, thank God, but much colder.

OK folks - here are parts one and two of the name that plant competition.

The pot of bulbs turned out to be daffs - but really nice ones.

Anyone guess the variety?

The border plant has started to pop up too. Any ideas on this?

The clematis has a way to go but I'll be holding a guess the variety comp once it flowers.

I'm stumped on the daffodil variety; will have a look-see thru some catalogues. And completely stumped on the mystery plant...don't have a clue what it is!

Your daffodil looks to me like Narcissus "Tamar Fire" CM. I am still investigating the other mystery plant!

Or it could be "Tahiti"!

I think the daff is a Tahiti (http://www.garden4less.co.uk/proddetail.asp?prod=TP147&gclid=CIqL-82a9pkCFQO2FQodsy9MSQ) ............

I'm not sure here's (http://http://www.trecanna.com/showdetails.asp?id=665) "Tamar Fire"!

I'm sure the problem is due to Firefox! Here's the link http://www.trecanna.com/showdetails.asp?id=665

I can't decide. In some pics it looks like one in others I'm not so sure. Maybe try and get a photo tomorrow more full on as the ones I have are slightly drooping.

Thanks for narrowing it down to only two though!

It is defininately a yellow DM, but I love that variety you've found. May look out for it this autumn.

This has decided me - tomorrow I'm going to photo all the daffs still in flower and try to identify them! We have loads of varieties and colours so should be good fun.

I have a suspicion the other mystery plant is a little euonymus - but it's a huge genus and I can't narrow it down yet.

I've spent ages going throught he books that I have and haven't seen anything like it - No wonder the garden centre just sell them off. The tall dead stalks beside it are an indication of how high it will get. I had left them there when I planted it to remind me something was there, so it still has a bit of growing to do.

The pic I posted has served to remind me I need to catch up with the weeding:lol:

Indeed it will be! I enjoy things like this (yes, get a life, Eileen!) :-D

I suspect it might be an euonymus too ......

Glad you're enjoying this.

If it is dry tomorrow I'll take pics of the ones that are still in bloom and do a guess the daff variety post. (quite excited about this now, how sad is that!)

I have three pots still to flower. OH's cousin brought them back from Jersey for me and I forgot about them:oops: They are supposed to be very fragrant.

That's what I love about Catsey...we not only share a love of cats but so many other things like this...the hens, identifying plants, songs, ...so nice to know people who enjoy the same things!

I saw a clip from daffodil grower on Gardeners' World a couple of weeks ago. He said that with all the modern varieties of daffs/narcissi you can actually have flowers for 5 months of the year!

I've never heard of it either - will be interesting to see if it produces the yellow flowers. I hate not knowing what is growing in the garden so was determined not to give in.

Laugh is I found it while looking up info on the Hostas I bought today:roll:
