Very worried about this dobe, he has come back from kennels where he was to have some intensive training, he was there for 2 and half weeks. I think the intensive training was too intensive. I dont know exactly how this guy trains dogs but I can only assume it's not nice because Zeke has lost 5 kilos in weight, he is refusing to eat and is a shadow of the dog that I knew several weeks ago.
As you can see from the photos, he was a very lean dog and didnt have an ounce of fat on him anyway. His neck is half the size it used to be, his ribs are poking through, his hip bones are so prominant, the spark has left his eye which are very sunken. A once proud and dominant dog has been reduced to an apathetic, depressed, anorexic and lethargic wreck.

Unfortunately, many people put their dogs to 'trainers' thinking they are putting them to behaviourists, as they don't realise they are different things. Also lots of trainers, specialise in training types of dogs and I know of one who most people consider to be very 'harsh'. I would be interested to know who it was. I often think they assume all dogs are the same, whereas they all need different handling, and some are more sensitive than others. Hope he gets back to his old self soon, and sorry he has been so badly affected.

Poor baby....thats not training, its B****y cruelty....

I cried when I saw him Pat.
His muscle tone has all gone and his head is held so low. I just sat with him for a while and massaged his head and neck while talking with his owner.
The other worry is, if he gets through this, how will it affect his future, i.e. what damage will have been done to his skeleton, his organs and his temperament.

Poor lad, I agree the trainer needs shooting. :(

Poor boy. Be interesting to see what the vet says. Is the owner not doing anything about it? All dogs need to be treated as individuals and it breaks my heart to see a dog 'broken' like that. Hope he manages to recover.

Oh good gracious - poor Zeke. I do hope that when his owner takes him to the vet, the vet can advise whether anything professional can be done about this so-called "trainer". I do so hope he can manage to recover.

I haven't heard anything else this evening about his vet visit and am worried sick about him.:(
I dont know if his owner will take any sort of action against this so called behaviourist (as he calls himself). I do know that the owners brother is furious and is his breeder.
I cannt understand why the guy didnt get Zeke vet checked when he saw the weight dropping off him, as thats what i would have done if he were in my care but then again maybe he knew all too well what he was doing to the dog.

Just found this thread. This poor dog has really been through the mill. I pray the vet will get to the bottom of this and wee Zeke makes a speedy recovery.

Must be such a worry and these things always happen over the weekend.

Hugs xxxx

What???? This 'trainer' needs to be outed and prosecuted so he doesn't do this to any other animals  Poor Zeke. I hope he can get through this physically and emotionally.

Update.
Zeke has had blood tests, xrays etc, partly to rule out that the dog was sick before he went to the kennels and partly to see whats going on. His kidney/liver levels are at the higher end of normal which i guess is to be expected due to the fact that he is not eating. He has lost another kilo in weight. He is on a drip to rehydrate him and they are also feeding little and often.
Fingers crossed he will be ok but as i said earlier, there is no telling what this experience will do to him.

Can't believe this - how must the owner feel. Send a dog to someone elses care and it comes back and ends up on a drip in the vets. What the h*** was this trainer doing?? Even if the dog is ill, why was vet care not sought earlier.

I know dobes don't always do well with change but the weight loss must have been obvious.

Sending him ((hugs)) and hope he improves.

My sentiments exactly, its not like we are talking about a few pounds in weight.
I think will be trouble for this so called trainer ahead as Zekes breeder and the owners brother are furious about what has happened to the poor dog and are asking all sorts of questions and seeking advice from other breeders, trainers and vets.
I dont know anymore at this stage but I will keep you informed when I know anything.
My main concern at this time is to support the owner to help Zeke.

He sounds like a b****y brute. I hate people who do things like that to animals. He shouldnt be allowed to practice what he does again. Please keep us updated when you can.

Zeke is on the mend and i have to say that he is walking much better on the lead after his experience. I havent been told what the vet had to say about his condition, so cannt report any more on that but I am pleased he is getting on with life and eating.

So glad he is improving - sounded as if it was touch and go at one point. I do hope you manage to find out what the vet said about his condition.

Ok here's the update. Zeke is looking better and gaining weight but.....
He is aneamic and his blood count is still falling. Still waiting on all the blood test results to come back apparently. The vets are very worried that he has some underlying condition and want him hospitalised for more tests, the owner is reluctant to do this as they feel it will stress him further. He is eating far more food than before and although he has been gaining weight, alot is going through him quite quickly.
It all sounds a little garbled as it was the owners daughter who was telling me all this and she is prone to dramatics and is also, imo, the cause of much of his bad behaviour patterns. She also told me before the walk that he was straining badly to urinate and deficate but when I took him for his walk he didnt struggle at all with either of these functions other than the poo was a little loose.
They are waiting all the test results before making any decisions to contact the "dog behaviourist/trainer".

Lots of possitive vibes needed.
Just got a call from Zekes owner, he has gone right down hill again, he has lymphoma and his bone marrow is not producing enough blood cells. He is currently at Edinburgh veterany School and the prognosis isnt good:(

Zeke was pts this morning, if it had just been the lymphoma, he may have had (at best) a few more months but he certainly wouldnt have been able to fight both conditions. His owner is very distraught but has done the right thing by Zeke who is no longer suffering.

Sorry to hear this Elaine - his owner must be very sad.
However, better to make the decision and save him further suffering.

Animals - who'd have 'em? They bring you joy; they bring you pain. Good job there's lots more of the former.
