What can i use for bedding in Guinea pigs

I have read that you cant use straw for in there bed. I have hay but is the an alternative to that. I have just read that they can use petbed. My question on that is can you wash it? I want to keep them as warm as possible as i know its getting cold and i am waiting to put them in the garage when the landlord has finaly emptyed it.
