Mags, I had an Acer and it was seriously underpowered and not at all reliable. I might have just been unlucky though. This was in the days when I just used the home PCs for surfing the web, listening to music and sending emails.

With laptops it's all about getting the highest-specced one you can afford. We also bought a Compaq for a member of staff several years ago and it ended up being a bit of a rubbish machine; I suspect due to spec rather than build.

I had a work DELL PC and I found it to be excellent. They will build it to your needs so you don't end up paying for things you don't really need.

OH gave me a surprise pressie of this laptop for Christmas. He went with friend of his who is very computer savvy. this is a Toshiba ad to be honest it does more than I allow it to coz I'm a bit timid to experiment. I surf the web, email and Skype my sister in the States and thats about it. But this can download anything , youtubes, etc. movies if I want, but I don't. I have burned CDs on it, copied files etc. I dn't need to store a lot of music but it can do. I had it 2 years ago this Xmas, so its come down in price. It cost £500 then . It's a Toshiba Equium with Windows xp.
It suits me, so there ya go :)

I have a dell and toshiba.

Dell is much more robust and better build quality than the toshiba.

Toshiba is slightly higher spec as it is newer machine.

I'd say both were good buy.

Try looking up some reviews on different laptops and see what you get back

I'm an IT manager for my sin's and I always recommend DELL Outlet to members of staff asking about PC's. All our kit I get from DELL. All the PC’s on the Outlet are things that have been returned to DELL for some reason, such as the spec was wrong. All the stuff is brand new and you have the same warranty as new stuff, it’s just that DELL can’t sell the stuff as new, hence some BIG savings! You can get a lot for your money. Only trouble is the site changes daily so there might not be anything that catchs your eye today but you might tomorrow, so you have to be quick!
