they say they came home and their seven year old bichon frise, tessie, was showing labored breathing. they rushed her to her regular veterinarian and after some xrays say that her heart is enlarged and the liver is enlarged to the point of taking up her whole abdomen. at this point they are just trying to get her stabilized inside an oxygen tank with an IV. they close in an hour and my parents are collaborating with the doctor to decide where she should spend the night (at her vet alone but on oxygen, at my parents house with my parents taking shifts watching her but the ER is an hour away, or at the ER where she would only be watched for eight hours and they would charge one thousand dollars). either way, the doctor says she has to be back by seven am to continue treatment. my mom is going to call to keep me posted and for support throughout the night.
she'd probably really appreciate good thoughts/prayers/vibes.
it has been crazy with everyone around here lately and now my mom is having issues too with one of her animals..i am hoping this is not a trend.

Oh Tink! I hope your parents were able to find a solution for her overnight. Will be thinking of you all, praying that the little one pulls through.

thank you.
my dad was hysterical and almost needed to be checked into the hospital because of his blood pressure.
they are both devastated.
they kept her on oxygen and iv during the night at the vet as they said they doubted she would pass and she was very stable. she was dead when the staff came this morning.
my parents are second guessing their decision and consumed with guilt. also shocked because she was acting normal until last evening.

What to say? It is awful she died alone away from home, but it would have been equally hard if not harder on your mom and dad to have her die at home, maybe in pain or convulsing... it did sound as if her time had come to leave. I know the shock and pain is terrible now; sending comforting vibes to you all...

my parents are still very depressed. can anyone suggest good pet support grief sites or uplifting books or stories? i'm trying desperately to get them to stop blaming themselves..they have so much guilt because of the diet they fed her, leaving her at the vet, etc.

Tink, if you look through some of the posts in Catsey's Bereavement section, there are some lovely poems to help you. One in particular, a Pet's Prayer, I have copied but I'm unable to paste it here (sorry, :( )
