Just looking for opinions, but do you think we could set ourselves up as a sanctuary. Many people have said we should, but we've always been unsure whether we would justify it. We do have a couple of sponsors for the rabbits, but what about doing it officailly, and do you then have to becomes a registered charity?

An interesting idea, not sure if you would have to be a registered charity or not but worth looking into.

How do you mean justify it? By the amount of animals already there? Financially? Sorry i might be being a little thick, so try to bear with me;)

I think it would be worth inquiring about, you have taken in a care for numerous different animals, so have the experience....

I mean morally, are we really worthy of calling ourselves a sanctuary.

Oh ok duh!!! Sorry my brain is sleepy tonight.

I dont see why not, you have lots of experience with different animals and do a damned good job of caring for them all as far as I know.

I would think you were definitely worthy of calling yourself a sanctuary ......I have read of all the the cases you have taken on board and I admire you for it!

I agree with Mags! Why not look into it further..regulations, requirements, etc! God knows there are enough animals needing a sanctuary! And you're so experienced.

I would say morally farthing that you could in all good conscience call yourselves a sanctuary. I am sure that the animals that you have given sanctuary to would agree. Otherwise they would have been pts - wouldn't they, so they have found sanctuary with you. Whether that's the the official meaning of a "sanctuary" as a charity or whatever, I do not know!

Why don't you contact another small sanctuary and ask them if they would mind discussing ins and outs with you. I say small because the biggies like redwings etc would be maybe too large for what you have in mind.

http://www.cottontails-rescue.org.uk/

http://www.mossburn.org/

These are two I've heard of and I think they are quite small.

I obviously have only been a site member for a short time but have always felt you respond to people quite sensibly and sympathetically. You obviously have a big heart and if you think you could cope with other unwanted/rescues then why not - you go for it.

That's a good idea, the 5 goats who had been abused and 2 of the sheep came from Mossburn as they needed to get them rehomed asap, before the owner was set loose again.
