View Full Version : Another Sequestra for Tate

Kay

Tate has just had another operation on his eye to remove a sequestra. This is his third. He is feeling really sorry for himself as the third eyelid has been stitched down and he has to wear a collar, bless him. It took him longer to come round properly from the op but he seems ok now. He has to go bac on Tuesday.

Unfortunately at his pre-op check they detected a heart murmer that has never been noticed before. While he was under they did a quick scan of his heart, no charge to me so there are good non-money grabbing vets out there. What they discovered is a real shock and Tate is now retiring and is going to be neutered as soon as the vets think it is possible. They have graded his murmer as a grade 5, grade 6 is the highest, and the scan showed thickening of the left ventricular wall. When he has got over the eye op they will conduct further investigations. It was really frightening to hear this and I was in tears all the way home.

I will keep you all up to date.

I'm hoping and hoping the results show something manageable. Fabes has a heart murmur (along with everything else!!) but he only has to have 1/8th of a tablet a day for that and his poor prognosis has nothing to do with the heart murmur.

(((hugs))) to you Kay

Oh gosh Kay - I'm so sorry to hear this. What a shock :(

The only consolation is that you have found out about it now and you can do all possible to keep Tate happy and healthy.

Please do keep us posted with the further tests and I hope his eye heals quickly.

Lots of love to you both

I am so sorry Kay. I had no idea what a sequestra was until I just looked it up. Poor Tate - I hope his eye recovers well and that his heart murmur is treatable.

Thanks all. Tate is going back to the vets tomorrow so they can check on his eye. I will have a word with them as to where we go from here with regards to the heart murmur. I will let you all know what they say.

Well Tate had his check up this morning. Ceri, the vet, says his eye appears to be healing well but she won't be able to tell until the stitches come out in another fortnight. She has given him some metacam just in case he is in pain as he does flinch quite a bit.
She listened to his heart again and let me listen. The murmur is very pronunced. I have decided to have Tate neutered in a fortnight when he has his stitches out. Ceri is also going to do some x-rays and scans at the same time so I should have more news then.

Glad to hear all is going well with Tate's eye. I hope the op goes well and that you are able to find out more about the murmur and possible treatments.

Oh my gosh, how did I miss this  Kay I'm so sorry poor Tate is so unwell. Hopefully his eye's now on the mend and the heart murmur can be treated successfully. But I can understand your worry and also the fact that he's going to be taking it easy from now on.

Big hugs to you both.

Good news on the eye, Kay. I hope that all goes well in a couple of weeks and that you get some more answers.

Hugs to you both :)

Thanks Fran, Yola and Charlie. I will pass on the hugs to Tate. He is sulking at the moment as Ruby has just gone for him. She eventually got used to him with the collar on but when I took it off she didn'e recognise him again. I dispair of these Persians.

Hopefully the murmur can be treated with beta-blockers. The vet says it is most probably HCM (Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy). There is a DNA test for this but unfortunately it is only for Maine Coons and Ragdolls at present. Hopefully that will change soon as apparently long-haired cats are more prone to HCM than short haired.

Well Tate has been for his second check up before next weeks op and it hasn't gone well. Ceri checked his eye and unfortunately it has gone worse. One of the stitches has come away and under the third eyelid it looked awful. She called Jill in who is an eye specialist and she said because Tate has already had one previous op on the eye and several ulcers/ sequestras his eye is very thin. The eye is now near the point of rupture and his only option is to put a contact lense in and re-stitch the third eyelid over it. If this doesn't work or they find it isn't possible due to the condition of his eye he will have to have his eye removed.

They have kept him in overnight and will operate first thing in the morning. They are going to neuter him as well.

Poor thing. He's been through so much recently. I hope they manage to save his eye; however if not at least he'll be more comfortable and there will be less stress on his heart with the constant ops and treatments. Fingers crossed.

I have just rung the vets and Tate has woken up after his op. He is still very groggy but that is to be expected as he only had the op about an hour ago.

They have managed to put the contact lens in and have stitched the third eyelid over it. He has been neutered as well. I have got to ring back at 2.00pm to see when I can pick him up.

Thanks everyone for your best wishes. They are very much appreciated.

I'm so glad to hear that he's come through the op, Kay. Poor little fella. He really is having a tough time :(

I hope this means that his eye won't have to be removed.

Thanks Charlie. It is just a matter of time to see if this works. I rang them again at 2.00pm as they said and they made an appointment for me to pick him up at 4.30 so I will be off soon.

It is just such a relief that he came through the op because of his heart murmur. Next will be trying to sort hat out!!
