View Full Version : More problems for Fabes

I've taken him to the hospital today as they wanted to try giving him an overnight infusion of pamidronate as a last ditch attempt to bring those calcium levels down.

She's just called me to say he's aneamic, has lost more weight and has blood in his urine. They want to now do the infusion over 24 hours.

I think I might be losing him......

It's not good news, Fabes is slipping away.

He's still at the hospital and so is Sol. Sol may be needed to give Fabes some of his blood so I can bring him home. Fabes is currently undergoing treatment to promote red blood cells but if this fails then Sol may be able to donate.

If we can get Fabes over this hurdle then I could have 6 quality weeks with him.

As you can imagine I'm devastated at the moment.

Candice - you have fought so hard for your boy, I am so full of admiration for you. I hope that the situation can be reversed, BUT through your worry and hopes for him to recover please, please spare a moment to consider whether it might be better for him to let him gently slip away.

Please don't think I'm being heartless or think I'm speaking out of turn - having seen pictures of your darling Fabes I just wanted to hug him . . . it's just something that we all need to take into account; reigning in our emotions and being objective for the good of the pets we love.

I do however hope and pray that he rallies around and you can spend continued quality time with him.

Many hugs.

Its ok Yola I understand what you're saying.

I had a long chat with the vet tonight and I asked her if I was doing the right thing. She said that she would in no way recommend this if she felt it was detrimental to Fabes.

There will be no more 'try this try that' after this week.

Fabes is a bit brighter today so they will reassess him tomorrow to see if he needs a transfusion or not. They have even had some purrs out of him!

Sol has passed most of the tests - just the last cross match which is being done now.

Oh I'm (I@m) so glad that he's picking up - I really am!!!

And I'm so relieved that you're not angry with my post. I wondered whether it was tactless, but I had a similar experience with Ferdy (my old black FIV boy) and it's always bothered me that I put him through operations just so that I wouldn't have to deal with loosing him.

Hugs to you and Fabes (and Sol).

Fabes has had a great couple of days - very bright and bouncy :)

He has also now developed a taste for roast chicken and is still eating the wet renal food he ate at the hospital. This is a cat who would not touch anything but biscuits for love nor money previously!

He has been outside in the sunshine today and is currently upstairs in his new bed with a heat pad :)

He is having lots of tlc and cuddles and Sol and Foofoo are looking after him too.
