Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone would mind giving me a brief insight into the behaviour of a Bengal cat.

Also any photos will be warmly welcomed ;)

Thank you in advance...

Lorna xx

Bengals are fruitloops who love to use your legs as scratching posts and launch at them with all fours at every oportunity:lol:   Or atleast thats my recent experience of them.
Beautiful creatures and fun to watch playing but can be a bit of a handful, climbing curtains etc.;)

Hi Lorna, we do have a few Bengal owners here but meanwhile here's a link to a thread from a Bengal Rescue member who explains quite a lot about the temperament and dos and don'ts of owning a Bengal.

Hope you find it useful...

This is a very interesting thread. I have just read the thread that Mags linked to above and have a question, which may be just showing my ignorance, but what the heck!

What is the difference between a Bengal and an Abyssinian?

The only experience I have of Bengals is when I stewarded at a show for a judge. They are truely stunning but a little bit too manic for me. Mind you I am used to Persians which are extremely laid back.

Spots, Angie! No, seriously, the Bengal has been developed by crossing the Leopard cat with various domesticated breeds, Abys , Egyptian Maus and others. Abys have ticked coats, and as a rule are smaller cats than Bengals. This is anecdotal, not from my experience but Abys are calmer cats, not quite so hyper. My Sultan was an extremely intelligent cat, apparently Hreow's Rover is too!

I must say they can be a handfull.
They need a gluten free diet
Can be very fussy about the litter tray(it has to cleaned every time they poo)
But a great cat..
They love to play (alot)
They love to be into everything

No. for some reason bengals don't get red eye from a flash, they get blue eye....Don't ask me why.

Now that's interesting! My Leia, who's a moggy, is the only cat I've ever had who gets "blue eye"...all the rest had the normal red eye...

Are you sure she's a moggy. She might have some bengal in her. She could have some marble bengal in her.
She looks like she has a leathery nose....Dose she have black poor pads, and black lips, also if the tip of her tail is black, and a spotty belly.
Her whisker pads are puffy and she has small ears, which are bengal traits.
Have you got some more pics of her on her back.( i never thought I'd ask that on a cat forum:lol: )

I've always assumed she was a dilute brindled torbie. Ancestry unknown, rehomed from a friend. She does have a sort of spotty tummy, although I assumed it was broken tabby spots, and a black tail tip; her paw pads are mixed. some dark red and some greyish black. She definitely has tabby stripes on her chest, legs and tail, but her coat is brindled tortie. I am more than happy to post pics (can sense the other members laughing, as I barely need an excuse to post them..:-D !) but here they are:

That would be really something to think she had some Bengal in her.......

Edited to say that if there is any Bengal there, she definitely did NOT inherit the activity gene! She';s a lovely, sweetnatured laid back cat ...can you say "couch potato"?

Sweeney Todd

O.k. I've dug around and found some pics of Leia, and i think she may have some bengal in her. I'm no expert but she be more bengal than moggie.
What ever she is you love her, and i think she's cute .

Time to get a little personal.....Does her poo smell worse than any other cat. I know it sounds stupid but I've been told that bengals can be proper stinkers.....

I think see has bengal in her:cool:

Sweeney Todd

Sweeney is also lazy.

dandysmom
08-05-2008, 09:38 PM
Ah, did not know there was such a thing as a lazy Bengal! I'd love to meet him.! And no, her poo isn't noticeably smelly at all; actually much less so than my Singapura boy's was! (We do talk about all sorts of things here, don't we...:-D)

Why do you think she might have some Bengal in her rather than being a mostly tabby/tortie mix?

Sweeney Todd
08-05-2008, 09:54 PM
She has quite a few of the traits... Smallish rounded ears, puffy whisker pads, spotty belly, black tipped tail..
She's also missing a few but if she's a cross she's bound too.
I think she may be a marble bengal cross.

Sweeney likes to play as well, just not as much as Kylie, and on his terms.

Dandysmom- I think you do have a part Bengal cat there. No doubt!

True!! And something I just thought of: Leia is a big cat...not fat, just long, tall and 14 pounds. Would that be another trait?

nursecroft
09-05-2008, 08:32 AM
They are very demanding.... very vocal... into everything.... and require alot of attention and alot of playtime!

But they are sooooooo rewarding and i love them :D

Ive seen a couple of cats near me that def have bengal in them, one of my neighbours has one that she rescued she chose him for his markings and had no idea!

Oh Eileen - so Princess Leia IS ACTUALLY a Princess! What wonderful news - bet you're over the moon!!!   Have you told her yet?

dandysmom
09-05-2008, 04:56 PM
:-D Not yet! She has a rather large ego already; like Eva she has always thought she was royalty, so I think I will keep this our secret here on Catsey! Yes, it is exciting: to think it all started when I responded to Sweeney's remark about "blue eye" and Bengals and posted her pic.......:D

Her real name is Silverglam Betula (Betula means silver birch) we shorten it to Betz!
