Mine haven't done that; purr and knead their paws in the air, but no noticeable tail action .......

I always thought they 'wagged' their tails when annoyed....

Same here, Mags! And they will thrash their tails when frustrated, as they do when they're inside and see a bird thru the window: chitter and thrash......

Because she's a tortie and tortie's are just odd - well mine is anyway  I have heard people say that they will wag their tails slightly when they are weighing up a situation, and it's only when they really start to thrash them around that they are annoyed - not sure how true that is :?

Denis wags his tail when he is happy, he wags his tail when having his tummy tickled in cuddle time, and when he is asleep. It's more of a floppy wag than an aggressive fast wag he does when he is angry. This is the only cat I have owned that does that.

also a purr is not always a content thing in some cats it can be a nervous thing

And a fear thing too: many do it at the vets ........as well as when in pain

Merlin has been known to purr and bite at the same time! His tail always goes up when I stroke him and he's greeting me and pleased. He swishes his tail when he's annoyed and I've learned to leave him be then! He definitely has two different types of bite -a sort of mouthing nip which is a sort of I love you and the usual who on earth do you think you are sort of bite - I don't like you at the moment!

Does you cat do a "Christmas tree tail" when he/she is scared?

Love that expression! I call it a bottle brush tail, and all of mine have done it when startled/scared/angry! Leia does a great one!

Our cats have always wagged their tails when happy. It's weird. O_o (Mind you, we do have odd pets.)

Honey will purr, nuzzle against you, enjoy a fuss and his tail will lazily flick back and forth at the same time. My cat Tiger often did the same, but Honey does it more often.

Beauty swooshes her tail when she's having something good to eat (like she wants to hunt it) and I have known her to quiver her tail when being stroked.

Leia twitches her tail as well as her feet when she's in REM sleep .....my others did too.

When we stroke Figo sometimes, he purrs and slightly flicks his tail, not in an aggressive way, maybe because he is thinking up of a mischief to do :)
