I've had this little low-growing eight-petalled flower for years and have never been able to identify it. I, erm, "liberated" it from a glade in the woods (a no-no!). It's not in any of the wildflower books I checked; occurred to me that it might not be native.. ... many of the plants we think of as wildflowers were actually introduced purposefully or by accident by early settlers: day lily, lyrethum, chicory, Queen Anne's lace, teasel, many others. So thought I'd post this and see if it might be one you know. Whatever, it's a cheerful little plant !!

Could it be a celandine?

You've solved the mystery! I was off Catsey looking it up while you were posting the above, and you're right, it's the lesser celandine! It is a non-native here; no wonder it wasn't in any of the wildflower guides. I wonder how it got to the woods...anyhow, it's very nice to know after all these years what it is!

Catsey peeps are so knowledgeable.......

I just love the difference between UK and US! Over here the lesser celandine is very common - I have it growing all over my garden and sometimes I have to dig them up. They have little bulbils and spread really quickly in shady spots before the leaves appear on the trees.

I am so pleased to have been able to solve your mystery!
