What is the difference between a slug and a snail? Aren't snails just posh slugs or are slugs just homeless snails?
And what is the bloody point of them?

Yes I know that Mags:roll: ;)
But are they the same thing? And what is their purpose in my garden? And do they eventually end up as butterflies?:?

An odd question from a non-gardener, but if you really want to know here's a link that will probably tell you more than you want to know...:-D

Dear god that sent shivers up my spine looking at those things.
So it seems I am right in thinking that snails are posh slugs and slugs are homeless snails:lol: Still not too sure about their purpose but this bit was scarey:shock:

Most snails and slugs are hermaphrodites, possessing both male and female genitalia. In some species, an individual may behave as male for a while, then as a female. In a few species, self-fertilization occurs. Mating requires four to 12 hours and somewhere around 86 white spherical eggs about 1/8" diameter are deposited in a small dirt nest about three to six days later.

Doesnt take that in seconds in my house:shock:

The slug is a wimp compared to the Snail, the snail is the most hardcore of all slimey nasties, its the front line of the ARMY, the 'shell' as some people call it is actually a helmet, it stops attackers getting to the gooey bit!

Its an army, the slugs are just privates and the Helmet monsters AKA Snails are the front line, dont they teach you guys anything in schools!?

But yeah I agree with Elaine they are pretty useless, what do they do other than eat out plants, and leave nasty snot like trails down your walls?!

Elaine

Hahaha, thats a brilliant post, hadnt thought of looking at them from an army point of view.

Elaine

And where do they get the energy from to mate for 4 to 12 hours at a time?

Mags
10-12-2007, 11:16 PM
Here's another interesting fact Elaine ..........

Snails are mobile creatures and can travel a mile in about fifteen days (although they don't). Slugs are almost twice as fast, able to travel the same distance in eight days. In your garden, a snail may travel a hundred feet for a meal.

where do they get their energy from?! They eat dirt and green stuff, where is the energy in that?! I ate dirt when i was a little girl and man i felt like dump afterwards!

Well, salt is sodium chloride which is an acid so I would think it burnt the poor slug by drawing out all its moisture ............ that's only my guess mind! ;):-D

I'm not 100% positive but believe Mags is correct....would look it up but off to dinner in a few!

What a horrible way to die. Although I detest the things i tend to run from them rather that harm them but have heard of people doing it.
So Mags, Miss Smarty Pants, how come they take 4 to 12 hours to mate and in my house it takes 4 to 12 seconds?

Slugs love beer! Put a saucer of stale beer in the garden to trap them...(awful waste of good beer IMO....) :-D

Elaine
11-12-2007, 08:58 PM
Why would i want to trap them Eileen?

To dispose of them! Put them in a baggie in the rubbish; there'll be that fewer to eat your plants and leave mucous trails about! :-D Not to mention less snail orgies.....
