That's a stunning pic, Moli! Are they passing thru, or do they overwinter there in your area? We have some resident Canada geese here, but we get great flocks of them going South...lovely to look up when you hear the honking and see the big vee...doubt if I could get a pic, they're very high!

We have a nature reserve just across the fields from us, they come back to it every year, and spend the days in the fields near by...Our house is right in the flight path...:)
I saw them in the distance, just pointed when thery got overhead and clicked...

I've only just started to be interrested in birds, but have a love for all living beings. I have sent off for info from the rspb so I can learn a bit more. We get the usual garden birds here also owls and kestrels

Stunning pic Moli! We had a flock of geese (no idea what kind) flying over our house a couple of days ago. What a noise!!!

We have just the common garden birds here, but do have a few raptors: peregrine falcons nest downtown, of all places, and lots of turkey vultures, American eagles nest by the Potomac river,,,and once years ago in the 70s when we had an incredibly bitter Winter we had a rare visitor: a Great Snowy owl!! One of my neighbors saw it...huge, magnificent bird; the sighting made the papers and all the birders were excited!

Large ugly scavengers, but they are magnificent to watch in flight...they can soar for hours on the thermals...quite common here...

Did anyone see the pics in the paper last week about the owl and kestrel in flight fight for the vole the owl had caught? the kestrel won but they were great pics

They are! Bigger than eagles. What I'd love to see, speaking of large birds, is a condor!! Have just seen them on nature shows, they must be breathtaking in real life........

Lovely pic! Heard and saw the first flights of geese here about 2 weeks ago, and have seen them every night since. We get Greylag, Brent and Canadas wintering by the river. It always spooks me the first few times I hear them because it is such a sign of winter.....one of those evocative sounds.

We used to have all the large birds of prey at our zoo but like the larger animals, they have gone too.

In a way I miss not seeing them at the zoo and letting children learn about them, but living in a cage, albeit a large one, is no life for birds that are meant to be soaring free..... :(

I agree Eileen .........they need their freedom. Unfortunately many people are unlikely to ever see them now in the flesh (or should that be in the feathers:lol:)..

And the same for me: like the blue tits you posted pics of recently; always nice to learn about other peoples wildlife. We don;'t have hedgehogs, which I think are as cute as buttons! But we have possums and raccoons and coyotes right here in the City! And white-tailed deer and black bears in the suburbs!

Moli
21-09-2007, 10:35 PM
Black Bears!! thats something DM, would love to see them...We have deer, in fact they are quite common where I live, see them often....

I just couldn't imagine living anywhere that close to black bears  Do they do much damage Eileen?

It's habitat destruction, Moli; we're paving over everything, ripping up forested land to build more condos, so the wildlife has been displaced and forced into the suburbs to encounter people. Deer are eating up peoples gardens and causing terrible traffic accidents as they dart across the roads in rutting season...numerous accidents"! And the young bears leave their mums in the Autumn to look for their own territories...frequent stories on the TV of people who have bears on their decks or overturning their bins in search of food...they are more of a nuisance problem than anything else; the really bad ones that threaten people are tranquilized and released way out in the mountains.
This is in the further out suburbs, not the ring of close in ones outside the City.

By a lot of people, yes! But they were here first, and we're encroaching on their territory....:(
