View Full Version : Hand rearing kitty

Had a phone call from a lady today who took in a stray cat a few weeks ago & she didn't realise the cat was pregnant, until she gave birth to 5 kittens on Tuesday. She's not been a good mom & day by day, the kittens have died, all except one. Sounds like she has got no milk or any maternal insticts. Today she has gone out & not come back all day. The lady is feeding the baby & desperately wants our help. I said I'd call her tomorrow & find out how the little fighter is doing, although she says he's very thin.
If he makes it through the night, I'll go and see the lady tomorrow & I may offer to take the kitten in, but I'd have to take the little pudding to work with me and keep feeding him throughout the day whilst at work. (obviously at night too) I'll keep you all posted.

awww bless it. I dont envy you Smudgeley I am hand rearing one of Fairy's kittens as he refuses to feed from his mum and will only take the bottle and it can become a real strain at times and is very tiring.

Fingers crossed you can jump in and get him back on fighting form before he loses too much weight and becomes weak.

Good luck and fingers crossed for the little kitten sending him healing vibes

thanks both.
My only concern is that the litter may have a virus, hence them all dying, but it sounds like they just haven't had good nutrition & I imagine they got dehydrated.
We'll see what tomorrow brings, luckily I would be able to take the little kitten around on my visits with me at work, so that wouldn't be a problem. Not ideal I know, but what chance would it have otherwise? :(

I think where strays are concerned viruses and illness must be one of the major worries when rescuing them.

Fingers crossed like you say its just down to poor nutrition and them not getting enough nutrients with missing out on the colostrum etc and nothing more sinister.
