I have to say my life sucks. I was doing fine with my new job and everything was going great until wednesday when I cleaned my cats litter trays and walked down the stairs. In doing that I have managed to either cause the slipped disk in my back to get worse or I have trapped a nerve. Either way I need a new MRI done and I am in agony. I have also had to be let go from the reception job because of my back problem. I might now need an operation to sort out me back. So that me for the moment.         :cat25 :cat25 :cat25 :smt010 :smt010 :smt022 :smt022

Oh Sally, what an awful thing to happen, hurting your back, losing the job and now facing possible surgery!! :( I'm so sorry; wish there were something I could do besides sending healing vibes......

Poor you, I know EXACTLY how you feel! I am recovering from spinal surgery as i had a prolapsed/herniated disc in my back, the disc material had also ruptured the sciatic nerve and caused no feeling to be in my leg and foot.

May I suggest you get the MRI done privately if you can afford it and jump the NHS queue because I was quoted a 3-5mth wait, I paid private and the wait was an hour and a half! Its worth it because I understand the pain you are in, my sciatica was crippling, i never ever want to feel like that again, i hope you feel better soon.

Ouch Tilly, that really sucks :( I hope you get to feeling a little better soon and fixed in the long term. Nothing worse than being on constant pain =/

As for the job, that sucks also :( Maybe you will find something that won't aggravate your back any further. Keeping my fingers crossed for you.

Sally
I was on the urgent list too, still quoted me 3-6mths for surgery, even after paying for a private consultation and a private MRI. I hope they see you quickly.

The surgery for me took much longer due to the nerve damage, but immediatey the pain is gone! Like switching the pain switch off its brilliant, first time pain free in 4 years or so. I went in on Monday and came out Tuesday, NHS said I could be in a week, and it was the SAME surgeon who did it privately and the same guy is the consultant too!

Hope they sort you out quickly, I was signed off last Thursday and will be back at work in 2 weeks, just 8 weeks after surgery and the NHS said it could be 6 months!

Borderdawn it sound like we have a simiiar problem and I hope they can sort me out. I could go privately but the surgeon said the op would cost 10,000 pounds and I don't have that money an I have got private health care but if it make the difference then my parents might be able to pay.
thanks for telling me your story it has given me some hope to hang on to.

You have a slipped disc and they quoted £10.000? Mine was £4019 all inclusive with physio etc.. BUPA hospital, Little Aston. They usually have set prices I think?

Anyway, I just want to see you better as I know what its like. I still have a "dead foot" the side and underside of my left foot is completely numb due to the nerve damage, but it wont ever bother me and still might come back ok, but its doubtful now. My responses and reflexes in that lower leg and foot are crap too, but again in normal life I should be ok, the pain is completely gone!

I had the same op 6 years ago. Unfortunatly I was one of the people it worked for untill I sneezed and put out the disc above the op site. I now have another out below the op site ( Oh lucky me ). I hope it works for both. Jac xx

Sally

I really sympathise with you.
I was laid flat for about six months after slipping my disc. MRI scan showed it was dehydrated so would never mend. I was in absoloute agony and on all kinds of tablets. I didn't sleep, couldn't get around, couldn't put my shoes, socks or knickers on unaided....it went on and on. My leg and foot were also dead due to sciatica.
I had physio x 4, traction x 3, osteo x 2 nd in the end I had acupuncture, it was really fabulous treatment for me. I was able to get around for the first time and was in considerably less pain. I have been back a further time when it seized up (never as bad). I have trouble on and off now but I now know what I can't do.
However a word of warning, the depression that comes with it can be as bad as the pain as people don't understand cos they can't see the pain. They get impatient with you and you do with yourself. mobilisiation really helps, once you overcome the pain barrier and to keep it moving helps with the supporting muscles around the spine (especially pilates)
Sorry you are experiencing this pain, look after yourself mentally too at this time. Chat to us anytime and don't feel as though you are putting on people by asking for help.

The specialist was a very mean old man who said he wouldn't treat me unless I stoppped taking pain killer and the yhe would give me an epidural which I have already had and didn't work so I won't be going back to him. But on a brighter note i have an MRI scheduled for next friday so that might help me out more.

thanks for all your kind words

That's awful tilly :( I hate it when they don't listen nor work WITH you on what they need to do rather than just issuing orders that don't make any sense. You can ask to see someone else as well.

I hope the MRI goes much better :)

Had MRI today and it wne t OK even though I had to be completely in the machine and I can't stand being in small enclosed spaces (I can't think oof the word for it) anyway the result should be back with my doctor by the middle of next week.

I'm glad it went well :) It's not nice at all having to go into the MRI tunnel and you did really well coping with it!

Fingers (and paws says Bubbles) crossed they have some good news for you when the results come back :)

That must have been difficult for you with claustrophobia, but I'm glad it's over and hope they'll be able to help when the results get back!

Yes the tunnel isnt nice, although I had headphones on and listened to the radio which helped. Im sorry you have to wait that long for the results, I had mine instantly and the consultant decided the course of action there and then, but its less than a week for you, so sit tight. Best of luck.

Sorry for not updating in so long but my dad needed his laptop back so I have been without a computer for a while. But I have now got my Grandpas computer which is sad but at least I am up and running again.
I got the results of the MRI and I have nothing pushing on any nerves and so I don't need and op. I am stil in alot of pain though but have managed to ween myself off one pain killer so at least I feel abit more awake. I have alos been refered to pain clinic so they might be able to help me. I lost the reception job but still have my nanying job. Not sure if I have said that or not. But anyway I am bumbling along as best i can.

Tilly
from one that has has the discectomy (that went dreadfully wrong) I'm glad you dont need the op. What pain clinic are you going to? There are two types as I have been to both. One is teaching you to live with pain and how to avoid it. The other is run by a pain specialist. Who can administer steroid injections ect.

tilly
12-10-2007, 09:34 PM
I am going to see they type of pain clinic that tries to cure the pain first and if that doesn't work then I will be referred to the one that teaches you to live with the pain.
Sally

Jac

Sorry forgot there's actually 3 types. I went to the one your going to. They are really good. Offer acupuncture and all kinds of meds. Everything crossed for you. One thing going in your favour, no nerve compression.
