How do you sex a parrot fish?
We have a woman who comes into work who now has 4 parrot fish:roll: She thinks she may have a male and 3 females as one seems to be chasing the other 3.
I thought it was a bit like the gouramis whereby the anal and dorsil fins would be longer and more pointed but I may be wrong.:?

The female's tum goes red and yes they have breeding tubes that come down. Most parrot fish are infertile as they are man made.

Oh and the males normally bigger

Some parrots can be aggresive, and it may be the one has decided he is the boss!

Jac, what do you mean "man made"....??
They are a cross between a red devil and a green terror DM which are two species of Chiclids, are not a native fish, man made and because of this most of them are sterile...

It's a good thing he has only one "wife"; I hate to think of the population explosion in your tank if he had concubines! :-D

Now that bit I am worried about. I did say to her that it may well be a territory issue. I think she wants lots and lots of babies, which again wories me as I dont think she has any where for them to go. She mentioned her other tanks had sharks and malawis in them:?
Would they be ok with molly's and or platy's? She used to buy them alot but I dont know if she still has a tank with those  or if she fed them to the sharks and malawis;) (joking)

She will have trouble breeding if she has 4 in one tank, a breeding pair need to be kept alone, otherwise they will not breed..what colour are her fish Elaine...

They are blood red parrots, but if most are sterile then she's gonna have problems anyway in that dept. I dont even know for sure what sex each of them are.

I have a pair of blood red ones, she does lay eggs regularly, but they are never fertilised, they just go white, so looks like the male is sterile...

I would not put them in with Mollies or platys, they are chiclids, and can be aggressive to other types of fish....I am a believe of keeping each species with their own kind...They would probably be ok with the malawis as long as they were all the same size.

I worry about putting anything in with the malawis. I love them dearly but man can they eat:shock:
We had blood reds at work and was told to put them in with the malawis but neither was very happy so I moved them into the gourami tank which went very well.
I have no idea what size her malawis are but will pass on all the info, thanx very much chum xxx

My blood reds are 4-5inches big, would make a meal of gourami's or anything small!
