kitten food

can someone tell me how old can i start giving my kitties adult food? do they have to be a year old?
tigs is 10 months
shadow is 4 1/2 months

I would say 10 months is fine for adult food - 4 1/2 months is prob a little young :? , so unless you want to feed them differently for a while, I would wait before changing. But I guess if you use pouches it wouldn't be too difficult - be prepared for Shadow decideing he'd rather have grown up food though! :)

Cassie was on adult food from about 4 months old. I took her to the vet one day because she had an upset tummy, the vet asked me what I fed her on, I told him Whiskas Kitten food and he said it was far too rich for her and to put her on adult cat food... her tummy problem stopped almost immediately..

thats what i thought. would it harm shadow if he had tigs adult food?

oh really. shadow hasnt got upset tummy but his poo smells worse than tigs.

Specialised 'kitten food' is quite a recent concept (When I say recent I suppose I am thinking 20 years - sorry all you young people who think that is ancient history! :) ) Before that, they only had plain adult food, in very few flavours. Cats survived then!
No it won't hurt Shadow if he eats grown up food (and as Mags sort of hinted) it might be less rich and make him less smelly.
Sorry I can't remember when I gave up kitten food for my boys .... about the 7 month mark maybe?

You can get an inbetween food, cant remember what it's called at the moment. It's between kittens and adults. I think its whiskas that makes it. If I'm wrong , someone tell me.

My hubby used to say there is no other smell worse than kitten poo or a kitten with wind!!! :-D

I fed my cats kitten food untilthe were 1. the only thing to watch is thgat kitten food has got more nutrient to help with the growing up. So I would keep the Shadow on kitten food for a bit longer but I think tigs is OK to come off it.

All mine have gone onto adult food at around the 9 month mark. Usually by then they are pinching the adults' food anyhow in preference to the kitten food..
