Sphynx and siamese, in rescues?

I absolutely adore both these cats-i have a real thing for hairless animals(have even had 2 hairless ratties!) so love sphynx kitties and hope to eventually have one in my life. i do know of a syphnx breeder in the west midlands but ive noticed they advertise on preloved so im thinking they might not be the best of breeders :?

i also love love love siamese cats-they are stunning kitties and hope to own one of those in the not too distant future ;) the thing is i would much prefer to get any kitties im likely to have from rescues. i dont have anything against good breeders but feel better offering a home to a rescue as i know breeders usually have homes lined up before even planning to breed :lol:

so im wondering, do either of these breeds come up in rescue often? are there any small rescues that specialise in these sorts of kitties? better still if they are close by. or even if someone could recommend a good breeder of either for my area?

and most importantly if you have a siamese or sphynx, please please please post some piccies for me to drool over :D and tell me their story and what they are like to own?

Well, we have a Siamese breeder in the making here (Fran) that will hopefully post her pics, but as for rescues - not sure! I have 3 persians and I know they are very difficult to rehome as people think them aloof and hard work (not true on either count). I suspect Siamese could be perceived as easier apart of course from them being chatty as anything. Sphynx? They're pretty rare here, so I don't imagine there are many for rehoming - not that I've seen anyway!

I wouldnt worry too much about them advertising on Preloved JB. I like to think of myself as an ok breeder and I advertise on Preloved as do a few fellow breeders which i know to be also reputable.
Quite a lot of breeders you will find advertise on the free sites.

Thanks for the replies. i have had a look on that link before but havent found anywhere close by on it. i did think that both breeds might be too "rare" to really be found in rescue, especially the sphynx(i waited around 4 years before being able to take on a hairless rattie and then two came along at once! haha)

i see what your saying actually Sarah, i think ive just seen that many bad adverts on there with horrible so called breeders trying to get rid of their animals that i forgot that its just a place for people to advertise like anywhere else. though i do know this paticular breeder sells for no less then £800 a cat :shock: now i know sphynx cats are rare but that seemed way too much to be asking. imagine how many kitties you could help if you donated that kind of money to a rescue? :? i just wouldnt feel right handing that kind of money over knowing that.

i absolutely adore moggies(i oughta considering im owned by two! lol) but these two breeds really get me drooling and i do hope one day i can have them in my life. i had read that siamese can be paticularly noisey though-and i think this pair are bad! :shock: :lol: it is my birthday in september though so who knows, with enough hints dropped to the OH i may just end up with one sooner then i think;) wishful thinking eh?:lol:

Sphynx are quite rare and as such breeders seem to command a lot of money for any kittens they have available. I do not know very much about Sphynx cats although I do know of one breeder quite close to me that has one breeding queen.

Siamese kittens are much easier to find as the breed is much more common. Siamese cats do sadly turn up in rescue :( Here's a link to some Siamese cats in rescue awaiting a new forever home

Siamese and Orientals (Siamese without coloured points) are not to be undertaken lightly. They are very demanding cats, often described to be more like dogs than cats. They are intelligent, nosey and interactive. They can be quite highly strung and they crave human attention and they like their own kind. So although they do get on with other breeds, they do prefer the company of their own breed. They can 'talk' constantly and can often be noisy especially when they feel you are not giving them enough attention. They are, however, a very rewarding cat if you have the time for them, they are a very devoted breed, give hours of fun with their antics and can be trained to retrieve and do other 'tricks' They adore to play and I can guarantee you will tire before they do! You will definitely never own a Siamese cat, a Siamese owns you and they can be jealous of your attentions to others.

I have 4 girls - 2 Siamese and 2 Orientals and I am eagerly awaiting a Siamese boy who will be coming here in a couple of weeks time. I personally would never buy or sell any cat or dog via an advert on a free-ad type website. I found out about my cats through word of mouth and going to shows and talking to breeders. I breed occasional litters of Labrador puppies and I don't have to advertise any of my puppies as I sell most of them through recommendation, owners who come back for another pup off me and I also have a web site that gives prospective new owners a clear insight into how my puppies are raised.
I already have prospective new homes and people waiting on kittens despite being very new to breeding because my breeding queens have come from good quality, well known show lines and I have had a lot of interest at shows where people have seen my cats and like what they see. Other breeders are also interested in my kittens and have offered me use of their stud boys which indicates that they like what they see also. What I am trying to say is avoid the breeders who sit at home, churn out litter after litter with little or no regard for the health of the kittens. Your best bet would be to visit some shows where you can see all the different colours, types etc, chat to breeders there and avoid the free-ad web sites.

I was going to put the same link up as Fran has.........there is a Siamese looking for a home at the Wood Green Animal Shelter at the moment.

I got both my Siamese from Wood Green when I worked there (Abi and Midas) but they don't come in very often and tend to get rehomed very quickly.

We also used to get a few Persians and Chinchillas in too, some even with pedigree papers and CC's (from shows) :shock:

I don't think you can ever really plan getting a pedigree from a rescue, as they are so few and far between - thank goodness.

I help out with the Ragdoll Rescue group and I know that we have a waiting list of people wanting raggies, so I guess it would be similar with the Siamese and Sphynx. :?

As for keeping a Sphynx - I have a friend who has one and they are remarkably hard work. Because they have no fur their sweat can't get absorbed and they can get very oily. They need their eyes and ears cleaned a lot, and also their feet or else they can leave oily footprints everywhere. :shock:

i had read about both breeds but didnt realise that Siamese prefered company of their own or that it is best not to leave them alone for too long. i did know about Sphynxs skin etc bless them. i do know i have alot of research to do into both breeds before taking either on, i just didnt know how likely they were to come up in rescue.

every animal is hard work but they are all worth it in the end :D if anyone knows of any really good siamese or sphynx sites that i can read up some more on both breeds id really appreciate it.
