Rudy & Caleb had an appointment today to give blood. Both passed their health checks, we were concerned about Caleb as he had been diagnosed with a heart murmur by our own vet, however no murmur was detected! http://s2.images.proboards.com/smiley.gif

A small blood sample is taken beforehand for screening & unfortunately Caleb became quite stressed when the sample was being taken, so it was decided not to use him today, but he was taken into the donation room and put on the table, etc, to get him used to what happens. Rudy, however was the model patient, no trouble whatsoever and he was able to give a full unit, which will help up to 4 dogs. Both received a dentarask and bandana. Rudy is absolutely fine, no ill affects at all. I was so proud of him!

Please visit the ppb (Pet Blood Bank) website http://www.petbloodbankuk.org/ (http://www.petbloodbankuk.org/), and see if you and your hound can help.

Well done those dogs!
I will visit the site. Dinah is a nice calm girl at the vets and has a good chunky body - I'm sure she could donate ... off to look at the site shortly
Edit
Ah - she's not big enough. 25 kg is quite a large dog :?
However, I will mention to my vet next time we go that he could always phone me if they need a donor urgently. I think they tend to use their own dogs though - vets dogs tend to be pretty fit and pretty placid, so they drain them then feed them steak! :)

I think it's a great idea and the blood has saved lives already. Unfortunately there is only 1 lab, based in Loughborough, Leics at the moment, so they are limited by distance as the blood needs to be back in the lab within 2 hours for processing. Luckily we are only 9 miles from Loughborough!

What an excellent idea!! I am not sure if I am within the 2 hour distance or not :? The weight issue is not a problem but as I breed my girls I'm not sure what commitment I could give. Will definitely look into though! Thanks for posting Kim :)

Fran, you don't need to make any sort of commitment, they are grateful for even 1 donation.

Well done. It's such a great cause.
I know of a girl who works in the PDSA here in Edinburgh. It was in the local news paper that one of her dogs donated to a dog needing blood years ago. I think they should have more blood banks. Blue would do it no bother. (cause his mummy said:-D )
