Maybe you misheard what they said. I've searched the net too and i cant find anything.
Maybe you should ring and ask them to put us all out of our misery. ;)

I put 'kalamanca' without the 's' into google and it didn't come up with much, except this:
http://www.rspca-tameside-glossop.org.uk/catgallery.html
which I assume is your local branch? It does mention them on there, but isn't really much help I'm afraid!:?
Maybe there Kalmacat's. When you pet them they Kalm you bring the old blood preasure down ect.
No only kidding. Dont have a scooby.

Got it!
What is the origin of these queer expressions I DB BRIGHTWELL. KALAMANCA CAT8.—In Lancashire tortoise-shell cats are called kalamanca cats. I couldn't get the link to copy, but it was in an Amazon book review; found on Google!! Now we know!

Well done DM http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/3/3_2_107.gif
Do you remember the other name I found when I was kitten hunting - Turtleback? Looks like our torties go under lots of aliases

Well done Eileen this is the first time I have heard of something that you cannot find on the web! I have got a Kalamanca too and never even knew it. By the way that is my local branch of the RSPCA where I heard it. Perhaps I should email them and see if they can tell me the history.

Didn't stop in page one of the Google search, kept looking till I found it, But couldn't highlight the site location itself for some reason (?), so just highlighted the quotation itself and pasted it. Waa going to try Yahoo search also, but don't normally use that; don't think it's as good as Google,

Note spelling of Kalamanca is "calimanco". Wikipedia rarely lets me down.

Just caught up with this interesting thread - I wasn't around when it was first posted! There are some extremely pretty looking cats in that wikipedia article, Emma-Lou!
Doesn't T.S. Eliot mention "calico cats" in Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats?

That's what they're called here in the States mostly, rather than tortie and white. I kind of like calico ......
