Is it a herb or a man made smell.

Why do cats like it.

Jet never seems that fussed on it.

It's a plant & the smell sends lots of cats very silly, although not all cats are "cat nip responsive"

Good link, Mags. Only about 4 of my seven cats reacted to it; some wildly, some just mildly, Leia's a mild reactor. Andrew, you can grow it indoors on a sunny window sill if you don\'t have a garden plot. Jet might react to fresh catnip; some of the stuff you buy dried isn't very pungent,,,,,,

I remember reading that catnip to a cat is like LSD to a person. India likes the little catnip treats and has gone overboard with her new 'fill as you go' mouse but is still ignoring the catnip in the tub on the patio, but the ginger tom from up the road loves it. Logoes

my dogs also love catnip - they steal my cats catnip toys and sook them till theres nothing left.

I had read somewhere that some dogs do have the same reactions as cats to catnip

THanks for the replies. My neighbour bought some catnip toys for Jet at Xmas but she hasnt reacted any different to them compared to her other toys. Was curious to know what it is.
