When I was in Pets at Home earlier I noticed that they sold cat grass.

Does anybody have any idea what its for? (i'm guessing for the cats to eat!!)

But does it have extra goodness?

Do you reccommend buying it for cats?

Thanks

Cat grass is good for your cat as its fibrous and helps to bind fur balls etc so that cats are able to eliminate them more effectively.

Yes, Elaine has described it's uses. ...some cats won't eat it, however! Mine would eat outdoor grass when they were walking outdoors on leads, but absolutely spurned the indoor grass I bought for them: gave it to my neighbor and her cat wouldn't eat it either!! Leia doesn't go out, so I pick some "wild" outdoor grass for her every day which she enjoys. Why not try some and see?

My boys loved their cat grass loads (must go and buy some more). It is as Elaine said, good for their digestive system and helps fur pass through the gut better.

I've never used 'cat grass' although I do have some waiting to be grown. My outdoor cats can often be seen to be eating grass in our garden. I will get round to growing the cat grass for my indoor cats...

Fran, I;d be interested to know if they eat it! Leia just had her "wild" grass that I picked for her and she enjoyed it...will not eat the indoor cat grass!

I'll set about growing it tomorrow Eileen, not sure how long it would take before it would be long enough for them to have?? Maybe Mags will have an idea as she often has some for Cassie..

It doesnt take long to grow, just a week or so, Cats like it, so do rabbits!! Needless to say when Radish got to ours, all that was left was a brown stump!

Cassie loves her cat grass, I grow it indoors every winter. As has been said, it aids their digestion and helps to bring up any 'nasties':D
It grows very quick and I ocassionally trim it with scissors

Mags, there are no instructions on my packet :? do I put it into compost or do the seeds just grow in the container?

With the one I had Fran, you just water it in the container and put it one the window sill to grow (but not in direct sunlight), and make sure you keep it damp.

Ahhh thanks for that Alex, I rather thought you might do that but looking at the piccie of Cassie with hers it looks like the grass is growing out of soil....

Put some compost into your tray or pot, sow the seeds liberally then cover them with 0.5cm (quarter inch) of compost. Firm down gently and keep moist. Seedlings appear after 3 - 5 days. Cut when 2 - 3 inches long to prevent leaves becoming coarse. Keep moist.

Hope that helps Fran;)

Apparently at least Bliss is going to eat it! I must have weird cats...Misty, Dandy and Patches snubbed mine, as did my friend's cat Kate, but they all ate outdoor grass....???

Strange isn't it Eileen? :? Mildred had a little nibble earlier and even Maud who does have access to the outdoors in the day time showed an interest in it too...

Better start another container if it's going over that well! Maybe I should give it another try with Leia....

The grass has grown, but Oli refuses to eat it! He has sniffed it! ;)

I won't bother taking photos because he is not interested in the grass! :)

I never tried growing grass because all the cats have had access to outside. I would think that outside grass probably has more interesting flavours, like a mouse ran through it, and it will be varied. The cats I had all seemed to seek out that long, rather sharp, grass, India, Bless her does her best to eat the grass but when you haven't any teeth it's very difficult, so she gets Katalax instead.Logoes

Logoes, the thing about outdoor grass flavors: living in the City, the grass is in the strip between the sidewalk and the street, and is presumably flavored with dog urine and car exhaust, UGH  But that's what mine have always eaten....

Dandysmom our cats always had access to grass in the garden and because I've never been a keen gardener the grass used to stay uncut for a lot of the time, and anyway the dogs needed it too - well its a good excuse for not mowing all the time Logoes

And besides, the grass was the dogs salad bar, right? :-D
