I have heard or read somewhere in the past that a few drops of Echinacea in your cat's drinking water can be beneficial for them by helping to strengthen the immune system. Has anybody any experience or information about this? Just wondering if it might help Porsha?

I've never heard of it for cats ran but I see no reason why it shouldn't help. I'm sure echinacea keeps human colds etc at bay (get the tincture, as pure as you can, rather than powder etc. I think it has a vague 'black treacle' taste, so I don't know if she would take it in her water or if you might have to pipette a little, diluted down, direct into her mouth?

That looks great Fran - go for it; it can't do any harm and may well do good.

I'm not familiar with this, but Dr. Fox the veterinarian who used to live near me and writes a nationally syndicated pet column is a strong believer in holistic medicine ...have a vague memory that he mentioned it ...don't see how it could hurt...

I've been this morning and got some Echinacea liquid from Holland & Barrett. Porsha's sneezing again  although on a brighter note her diarrhoea has stopped. I've decided that it's worth trying to boost her immune system. I know a lot of breeders of Siamese use Echinacea on a regular basis to help keep their girls' immunity strong as the stress of calling can sometimes cause them to go under the weather. I've added a couple of drops to each of the water bowls. It's a brown, gunky liquid but I've seen them drinking the water so it can't flavour it too badly. I've also put some in the dog's drinking water as the cats often drink out of there too and the dogs have drunk it no problem. I'll let you know what I think after I've had a few weeks of trying it out..

Fran, I don't know if you'd considered probiotics for Porsha. They strengthen the immune system (I take them myself). You might want to look at this link and ask your vet's opinion .....http://www.flintriver.com/Probiotics-Overview.htm

Thank you for that Eileen, actually, Porsha has had several courses of pro-biotics and pre-biotics. They don't seem to really help her much :(

Oh dear! Well, it was just a suggestion; sorry it hasn't worked. Her problems are really complex, aren't they; you must feel so helpless...

Echinacea is very good for animals as well as humans to keep the immune system in tip top condition, it should be used two weeks on two weeks off. Hope this helps
