A month ago I bought 2 little parrot fish, one the size of a 50p the other smaller....Today when I was about to clean them out discovered 100's of baby fish! what they are and where they have come from is a mystery! I have a breeding pair of parrots which are 4-5inches big, they lay eggs and nothing ever comes of them....These two new ones are babys, so where have all these baby fish come from??

Thank you ladies you have been a real help!
The two baby parrots are in a tank of their own, so cannot blame the breeding pair for these...

Seriously, could there have been teeny tiny microscopic eggs in the water you brought the babies home in? They've grown and hatched (maybe in the gravel so you didn't see them)

Don't know if you know Mags, but fish cannot live outside water, so don't think your gooseberry bush is the answer either!

I was thinking the same Moli?

If there were eggs in the water DM, they would have hatched after a week, I have had these fish just over a month....These babys are ll in a huge pot, and every time one gets out, the parrot catches it and puts it back, they are acting like they are their babies....But really cannot see how they can be, they are far too young!

How long do they take to grow into something recognisable?

Too small at the moment, all you can really see are two dark eyes, their bodies are transparent at the moment...

If they are parrots, the fish shop will be kicking themselves, baby parrots cost between 12-£16 each!!

Now moli I am not getting into another "Fishy" conversation with you and the fact that these fish are "Parrots" is somewhat worrying! So Ill fly off and leave you to feather the nest for these baby creatures!

Look forward to seeing them. Can you not take pics of the swimming eyes?
Dawn.

Do Parrot fishes tend their young, or are they cannibalistic?

Moli
16-01-2007, 09:49 PM
They look after them DM, as soon as one gets out of the pot, they scoop them up in their mouths and put it back in.....very protective of their young..

So, in effect, you're sort of sitting on a pot of gold in that tank?! Would the fish store buy some of them back....that's an awful lot of Parrot fishes if most of them survive !!

Mags, when I was a little kid, got a chick for Easter (didn't know way back then that it wasn't a good thing) , and he grew up of course into a rooster. When he started to crow, someome complained (chickens in the City are illegal); a policeman showed up at the door to my Mom"s embarrassment and said get rid of it...and Mom and I almost died when my Dad said something about fried chicken!!! (Took him a long time to live that one down!). Anyway, Henry went to live with the egg man, supposedly to live a long happy life on the farm, but probably ended up as ....fried chicken...so, I really don't advocate eating pets....

Mags
16-01-2007, 11:11 PM
 Good story Eileen ....... poor Henry wasn't doing any harm in the town, was he :(
I wouldn't have liked the thought of him ending up as fried chicken though :lol:

dandysmom
16-01-2007, 11:16 PM
Technically, he was illegal just being in the City, and as he crowed loudly at dawn it annoyed someone...hence the policeman at the door! Funny, I could never even contemplate eating Henry, but had no qualms about holding the chicken at my Grandma's so she could chop off its head...stewed chicken and dumplings for dinner...guess kids can compartmentalize the difference between pet chickens and food chickens ....

Mad? us? dont know what you mean!:-D

Its just that Moli has Parrots, for fish, and they are babies, too much of babies to have babies, but they have, had babies that is, or have they? See Moli likes to confuse us, with aliens and things, and things of a strange nature, like things disappearing on RAF ranges or something if I remember correctly. We worry about our Moli at times we do. :-D
