....................if these are terrapins or turtles, please?

They are about the size of a small dinner plate and were taken through an enclosed glass 'pond' inside our hotel in Croatia. Sorry about the quality, it was quite shaded there..........

I wonder if anyone recognises this bird too...........it is slightly bigger than a backbird, very noisy squawk. They seem very common in Croatia.....
Once again apologies about the quality.......

The bird looks like a Jay Mags.
Not a turtle/terrapin person, so haven't a clue on that one - or what the difference is!

Thanks a lot DM!;) I must admit that I have never seen a Jay in this country but they are certainly plentiful in the woods abroad:cool:

I always thought terrapins were tiny - so I have learnt something new today too!!

I used to keep Terrapins, they were nice, I had "midge, titch and Yampy!"

Jays are a real pest here, they are really viscious too, they dig out fledglings and rip them apart, classed as vermin, very pretty but nasty. They make a "laughing" sound.

I like your terrapin names Dawn.......how long do they live for?

I didn't realise Jays are vermin and like you say they are very pretty. Now you mention it, I can imagine them being nasty as they used to make a hell of din in the trees, sounded like they were having a go at each other...

They are red-eared terrapins that can live upto 30 years. It sounds like you saw a couple of adults, if they were dinner plate sized. I have to say that as much as I like looking at them, they arent the first pet I'd like to have.

the local wildlife rescue near me is over-run with them due to people not realising just how big they grow and of course, how vicious they're bites can be.

great photo's though :D

I think we had one for about 9yrs, to be honest Mags I was much younger, I just remeber their names and that we used to have them running round on the lounge carpet!!

We used to keep terrapins. They were only small but someone stole them :(
