This is the garden during last summer, shortly after we laid the 1st stage of the paving to give us a sunny seating area. We tried to lay new grass but this didn't survive during the winter, leaving hideous bald patches and the decision to pave the whole area. The garden is north-facing and the grass on the foreground is called 'Dairmuid' and was bought from Mr Gavin's Chelsea Flower Show exhibit last year.

Here are the pictures of the garden with path and lawn removed. It was ok for a couple of days but once Dominik had been over it with his 'digger lorries' it became a real nuisance  This is the garden taken from the same angle as above:

And this is the garden from the bathroom window. Plants on the far left (apart from the purple spikey) have all been removed as this is where the wall is going . . . they'll be put back later.

Later I'll post some pics of the wall hubby's been building during this last weekend. We've used reclaimed bricks and I have to say they look really nice :-D

It's going to look stunning! Not looking bad at all at the moment, either.
Does Dominik miss his digger-lorry playground much?

LOL Mags!!!!! I haven't been doing anything; just fetching glasses of cold water and beers for hubby who's been working his socks off poor love.

Hreow - Domi's in digger lorry heaven especially as after all the rain, the soil is less powdery and more 'diggable' ;) Good job I've just got a new washing machine coz he's getting all his clothes super-dirty at the moment

That looks excellent - really good I love old/reclaimed bricks. Suits the style of the house brilliantly - I too adore works in progress.

Finally managed to get a PC to work long enough to upload some pictures . . .

Here's the paving by the back door, with Darcy in attendance (and Fifi asleep on the toolbox inside the door). 'Scuse the mess as hubby's yet to clear all his tools n stuff away. We have left little spaces where we'll drop in low level plants to break up the expanse of hard surface . . . you can see one of these is going to be where the plant pot is stood . . .

This pic is taken looking towards the end of the garden from the house. The brick areas break up the greyness of the slabs really nicely - I'm well pleased with them! We will probably be adding one further row of bricks to the little retaining walls as I want bulkhead lighting along the wall (the garden's very dark in winter and is our main route into the house). Balie can be see 'butterfly hunting' towards the end of the garden :D

And this is the garden from the gate end.The paving will look much more 'finished' once grouted . . . I think that will be happening over this coming weekend. And Balie is STILL looking furtive

That looks fabalous Yola.

We're considering slabbing our back garden. I just love the brick inlay in the slabs it's really, really nice.

That looks fantastic and the brick does break up the eye doesn't it. For your low growing plants consider "thyme" it smells fantastic and you can walk over it and it flowers.

Just a suggestion. Karen

Thanks Karen - thyme is a good idea . . . I plan to get some herbs for some of my larger pots anyway - so some low-level thyme will fit in nicely.

We have a wonderful place just on the outskirts of Reading, The Herb Centre; this is due a visit from me to stock up on some of the more unusual culinary herbs available.

Interesting thing is, since hubby's visit to my herbalist - he's taken a keen interest in both culinary AND medicinal herbs and wants to learn more about them - which as far as I'm concerned is great!!! :-D

Look really good Yola...and you have a nice tidy shed too...

I don't have a shed . . . do you mean the white double doors? That's my utility room which leads into the basement (kitchen and dining room) of my house. If it's that you mean then heaven forbid!!! It's seriously untidy . . . hubby has all his toolboxes scattered all over the place.

The cats tend to clutter it up too ;)
