I have a kitten here who came in with an extremely bad eye. She is approximately 6-7 weeks old and it looks like she will need her eye removing   I'm worried obviously because of her age etc.....has anyone else had an op done on an animal so young :?

You'll find she'll be ok & will cope better with the surgery than you could imagine. :)

I think she will be ok too, dont forget kittens are routinely spayed now at that age, although an eye op is more serious, I expect she will be fine, good luck to her.

I'm hoping so Smudgley because the vet is worried about her age and size, which makes me nervous putting her through it. She's back in the vets shortly and I think he will be letting me know when he wants her booked in :(

The other worry Dawn is that we don't actually know what's behind the eye ball, this is where we think the infection is coming from  When the vet first checked her, he had to coax the eye open and it was just full of green gunge......I'm hoping there isn't more to it but we won't know until she has the op

I know Dawn but it's worrying all the same   I had to have one of her litter mates put to sleep the other day, they are not the healthiest of kittens

My friend has just had the very same op done on one of her persian kittens and it was a complete success. She is now acting like all her littermates and getting up to the usual kitten mischeif totally oblivious to the fact she only has one eye. The kitten was only 3 weeks old as well so try not to worry. Fingers crossed.

Dawn.

I do, but mainly deal with ferals.......Keiko came in a couple of weeks ago. Sean is having a word with the vet who will be doing the op and it looks like it is going to be on Thursday

Fingers crossed she'll be okay.

Thanks for posting the pic Des :)

Not a prob - I tried to pick the nicest one. Fingers crossed for her, I am sure if he thought it was too risky he wouldnt have booked her in.

I spoke to Sean earlier and I had to stop myself from crying when he asked if I was alright about booking her in :( :( I think the fact he has warned me about it being a risky op......I'm just so worried about her

Nicholas had his eye removed at 12 weeks as the catflu attcked his eyes and boy - was it unpleasant, though he never seemed to care.

Eye came out - antibiotics went in, and despite me being conviced that they had stitched his face too tight and being told by the vet - "oh no - its just swelling" they have indeed stitched a little too high and his left side lip is about 2 - 3mm higher than the right. he looks like he is smirking.

And he is a complete nightmare, climbing curtains, walls etc. no complications from the op at all, he just didnt seem to care!!

Update on Keiko.

She had her eye removed last Thurday and she's absolutely fine. She handled the anaesthetic brilliantly and had no problems. When I went to pick her up and she heard my voice she came to the door of the cage, and then flopped over on her back for tummy tickles......she is such a babe :D She is on antibiotics and she has to have her stitches out on Monday.......fingers crossed her other eye remains okay, they were a little concerned about it but to be honest, it does look better since the other eye was removed.
