That's teriffic!!! Love asparagus but the stuff from the market's never as good as homegrown. I grew it for years until the trees got so big they shaded it too much & it...died:cry:

Sod pictures, send taster-boxes! :-) Asparagus straight from the bed.... can't do much better than that.
I had asparagus and new potatoes the other night (with sage butter) and I was so disappointed; mostly woody and hard :( Whereas last year we had the same about 1/2 a dozen times and each time it was heavenly.
Are home-grown any more consistently delicate?
I think you have to pick them young or they do tend to be tough and woody.....

EmmaG, give it a try if you have a nice sunny spot! Takes about 2 years to get really established but worth it...MUCH nicer than the stuff from the market:-D

Not terribly. Once it's in and going it's not too bad but it needs a lot of tlc at the beginning and you can't really pick for 3 years (as you're cropping all those shoots and it needs time to build up). After that the beds just need keeping tidy and weed free and a nice dollop of manure/compost on top each autumn.
It's a bit of a luxury really, but if you have space it's not too bad.
