Well the start of the new kitchen is happening today - a new ceiling.

But already a major disaster!!!! Upon working on the ceiling it has been discovered that an old chimney breast has been taken out of the kitchen and has not been supported!!

This chimney goes up into Emma's bedroom then out onto a chimney stack on the roof. Not what I wanted to hear. So dangerous and lucky it has not fallen over the last three years I have been here:roll:

It is too costly and time consuming to remove the whole chimney in Emmas room and roof, so it has to now be supported properly. More cost and more time consuming.

Hope the rest of the job goes to plan. Will post pictures as I go and here are the first few of the said problem :?

Well, the chimney has now been supported in the ceiling and the ceiling has been boarded over, so a little progress. That has taken all day as the support work was unexpected:roll: Just needs plastering over and coving to go up!

Latest update on my kitchen is:

Saturday - kitchen all arrived taking up all of my dining room

The builder is supposed to start Tuesday so I have literally cleared EVERYTHING out of my kitchen - food, cupboards, dishes, plates, equipment etc etc. All that junk that just piles up

Spent ALL today clearing up.

Just had a phone call from the builder to say that could he start Thursday now and not Tuesday as he has another "emergency" job. Not impressed at all. He is putting the other job before me as he knows my job is a guarantee etc cos he knows me. Not a happy bunny at the moment.:(

Aw that's just not on, is it Donna! Why do builders have a habit of messing you around with all these 'emergency' jobs? I hope you let him know that you weren't happy about it......a kitchen is one room that needs to be done first. How will you manage about getting your meals?

At the moment I have all appliances working, as the actual kitchen is still intact. I have spent all day emptying the cupboards. All the food is in carrier bags, the cups and plates are in the bathroom, etc etc. It is just gonna be a complete pain to live like that for more than I originally thought. :(

Bit more progress today. Hope it hurries up as the cats are fed up being shut in my bedroom until I get home from work. (Hope no one thinks I am being cruel).

The emergency electrical work was done this morning and the ceiling has been plastered. Also had a bit of a stud wall put up and plastered over to cover up all the pipes and allow the integrated appliances to fit in well.

Nothing happening tomorrow, but works begin on Monday again. Can finally now start the kitchen installation.

Oh, and I also had a gas leak!!!

Hreow
22-04-2006, 08:22 PM
*Very* cruel. Think of all the fun they would have "helping" the builders. You wouldn't have much house left. :-)

Gas-leak sounds ominous and scary. Presumably quickly found and fixed?

They would not have fun with the builders - they are scared of their own shadow, let alone two big hairy men who make TONS of noise!!! Also, worried they would get out the front door as it is being left open a lot as the builders are in and out, and I dont let them out the front at all and only supervised/short trips out the back.

The gas leak was caused by pipes getting moved in the demolition of the old kitchen  and was only a small leak. All sorted now :-D

23-04-2006, 09:04 AM
And you're still worried you're being less than nice to the cats by keeping them safe and out of the worst of the noise? They've trained you well, but it is exactly where they should be, IMHO.
Any light at the end of the tunnel? Past the worst bit? New kitchens are worth the hassle, but *only* in hind-sight. :-)

Definately going to get rid of that horrible blue!!!

I have some green I might use (hardly any wall will show by the time it is finished) - need to buy tiles too - got the builder to work out the amounts today so can go have a look soon. Oh, and decide on the flooring :-D

Donna
26-04-2006, 09:15 PM
Now I have a sink and all the plumbing done. Think the washing machine/TD and dishwasher all plumbed in too but not sure so not using them yet!!!

Went out today and bought the flooring and just need to get wall tiles. Hope the kitchen all installed by tomorrow then just the finishing touches etc after that before wall and floor done :-)

Donna

Builder was obviously being optimistic!!

Are you all sick of my updates???

Oh well, soon be finished - to date I have all wall cabinets up, all worktops and base units (although some have no doors). The cornice and pelmets are half done. The appliances although in the right place etc cannot be used just yet due to technical difficulties (lack of socket for one, lack of vent for another and lack of whatever for the other!!). Sink all fitted. Bought the flooring yesterday but he doesnt want to put that down till all appliances have been finally put into place.

Struggling to find suitable wall tiles.

Beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel!!! But want my house back!! There is a man that seems to have moved in!!!

I have food and cutlery and pots and pans in the bathroom, I have to stand two feet away from the bathroom sink to brush my teeth, I have a huge pile of dirty washing in my bedroom, I have food in bags in my dining room, ...

the list is endless.. that is what I am finding hard...

But all will be worthwhile and a distant memory before long...

Completely finished bar me painting the walls but that will take ten mins. The gap at the end of one run where it looks a bit messy is the access for the catflap for Misty and Chloe :-D
