Well here is an update on my seeds. As you can see not quite on the scale of Emma or Mags

First tray are the ones that I feel more confident with as they look quite healthy and strong. Couple of sunflower seeds too just in the corner:

And these are the ones that are very feeble and dont look too strong or healthy:

Not very impressive are they:roll:

Donna, they are very good, especially as it's your first attempt at growing from seed. The first tray looks very healthy......I can see the sunflower...what are the others?

Happy with the first tray. If they get to be garden plants then I am happy. Feel I have succeeded on the first attempt. If the second tray do not survive there is always next year!!

pathetic arent they, and there was a pack of seeds planted in each pot!!!
Mind you since then I do have three small propogators, so am hoping that will help the pansy's and love in the mist grow a bit better.

I think you may have overwatered those seeds CJ......have you got drainage holes in the trays?

CJK
06-04-2006, 12:31 PM
yes, and i know it looks wet but the mud is actually quite hard and dry. still some seeds are better than none, iguess!

Donna

Wont laugh Cj.... but...... oh dear!! Hope the others turn out better for you. Think half the trouble is having the correct tools for the job.. so the propegator should help!

CJ - it looks like you're using soil that's maybe too heavy for seedlings. Maybe next time try adding some sand to enable them to drain more freely. Either that or some bagged compost . . . Donna - it could be that tray 2's seeds are just more 'leggy'. In the past when I've done this some seeds come up looking really weedy but that's what they should look like!!

It's all a bit trial and error really!! :)

CJ, I had a question about the soil also, are you using potting soil from a garden center, etc? Not dirt from the garden? It does look awfully heavy......

CJK
06-04-2006, 09:25 PM
it was bagged compost. not working too good though is it lol!!!!

EmmaG
06-04-2006, 09:45 PM
I think you need seed and potting compost, regular compost is a bit too heavy.

Donna

I dont know what I have used for compost. Just picked up a nice blue bag!! Was the smallest one for me to carry - but maybe I was lucky and got the right one. Didnt know there was different types!!

Just thought it was mud in a bag!!!

Have tonight transferred the healthy looking seedlings into small posts.

Also potted the sunflower seeds - one seed had a root of about 30-40cms long!!!!

Dont think the soil in the tray was deep enough and must of just gone round and round inside the tray lol:roll: :-D

Another thing to add to my list of "needs" for gardening!

Well done Emma!!! I remember saying when I planted them, but I have slept since so now a vague memory!!!

Bought some pots today to plant up the thin scrawny ones. HOpefully that might encourage them to strengthen and grow:-D

I only know Donna as I came across the other thread where you posted up the names of the seeds!!! lol

I think Impatiens are also known as buzzy lizzies ;) They look REALLY good Donna!!!

You can also use toilet roll and kitchen towel innards for pots :)

I have a great selection - cream tubs and mousse pots!!! But also got some proper pots today!!! Will save all cartons from now on to use as they are just as good:-D

EmmaG

lol also with the toilet roll and kitchen towel innards if you want to plant any of these straight into your garden or say bigger pots you can, no need to remove from the tubes, as the cardboard will breakdown in the soil over time ;)

This is an experiment Emma!!!

If I can get some in my garden and growing in the summer and making it look pretty then there will be no stopping me next year!!:p

However, if they all die then that will be the end of it:shock:

Nah I reckon even if something happens to them lot (not that it will) you will continue to try and grow from seeds. I have never had much success with flowers, perhaps I would be ok if I tried now, but I love growing veg!! ;)
