Treating nausea

Our new member "truthisoutthere" (an X files fan?) posted this on the BBC forum yesterday. There's not a lot of pet help on that forum now (I'll start another thread on that :roll: ) so a couple of people advised posting here (I recognised logoes!).
I thought it might help if I reproduced the question here, and we can maybe come up with some suggestions before TIOT signs in again.

"I was wondering if anyone can help. My Maine Coon cat of 19 years was diagnosed on Wednesday with Feline Aids, a very sad day, but he is still with us, and purring away in his cosy bed, so that's good for now. The vet had just tested him positive for Hyperthyroiditis a few weeks ago due to unexplained weight loss and lack of appetite but he is now off those tablets as they just seemed to make him out of it, wobbly, and depressed, and he wasn't and isn't putting on any weight with them either, poor little man. He is on a special diet now, Hills z/d, for cats that can't assimilate protein, although he hardly eats at all (except cod from the chippy minus the batter!)I'm hoping this will help. Now he is off the thyroid tablets he is STILL retching in the mornings. I'm up every 4-5 hours in the night feeding him ti-bits, which seems to be the only time he's hungry. I feel incredibly guilty if i dont! He is on Oil of Evening Primrose as an antioxidant and for vitamins but the big question is: Does ANYONE know of a natural/homeopathic remedy that has been proven as safe and effective in alleviating nausea in cats? Vet can't give him anything cos any chemicals will just cause his body to fight back even more, what with the Aids, so it has to be natural. If you guys know of nothing I might try a referral to a homeopathic vet, but the long car journey to get him there wouldn't be fair on him..so unless i can absoloutely avoid it.. Any suggestions gratefully received, thanks."

I did post this somewhere else - I think it was in response to a question CJ asked but I couldn't find the post . . . there is a company that produces homeopathic medicines for animals called Meditrina, www.meditrina.net (http://www.meditrina.net). They cover a wide range of ailments and specialise in products that help boost the immune system.

I've had their leaflet in my filofax since 1998 and I did occasionally purchased products when I had my FIV boy, Ferdy.

There is definitely homeopathic remedies for dogs with nausea as I used them during Tikka's pregnancy. She suffered morning sickness and vomiting quite badly. The remedy was in the form of drops that I put on her nose and they worked extremely well. I was very impressed. It would certainly be worth getting in touch with one of the homeopathic vets and asking if there is something similar you could use in cats.

Slippery elm bark is something I have used in the past with Winston. This is only my personal opinion, but I felt it helped reduce his stomache acidity and also helped with his constipation too. I would certainly use it again if the need arose.

Thanks for all these. Last I heard from Truthisoutthere, the puss was not well at all and they were going to a homeopathic practice. Haven't heard anything since, so I hope it's not bad news; we've had enough of that lately.
However, hopefully this thread will help others in the future.

Went to homeopathic Vet on Monday (my boy was an absoloute angel on the journey there but couldn't wait to get back to his bed!). His history(healthy) and character (a loveable, demanding, handsome, fruitloop) were all taken into account and it turns out that he reckons it's not the Aids that's weakening him (his organs are ok) and affecting him so much but the thyroid that needs to be balanced. The tablets he was on at the conventional vets were doing him no good (he came off those 10 days or so ago),and he's now on Lycopodium 1x a week(to give him his confidence back) and flor de pietre/thyroidium and something else, a mixture to take in spray form 2x p/d. The vet expected his nightly vomiting to cease within the 2nd week, but after the 1st DOSE he hasn't been sick since! I'm also absoloutely amazed at his progress over these past 3 days alone! He's been showing an active interest again in what's arond him, sunshine, sights and sounds. His bed is not used so much. He even went along to my neighbour's kitchen and said hello, my neighbour thought he'd seen a ghost! He sleeps like a really contented boy now when he's sleeping, stretching his paws out and yawning when he wakes to get up and eat, even snoring again! He' wants food, food, food,and his 'runnies' seem to have cleared up almost overnight. I tell you, i'm amazed. Considerig he was at death's door and just wasting away a week ago, I'm keeping my fingers and toes all crossed (and the others, their paws). He's gota whole bunch o peeps who love him to bits and his bros and sis do too, so love is not in short supply. Thank you to you all for your healing thoughts and prayers, they really do count. XXX :D
