View Full Version : The feral kittens need names

I need names for the 2 kittens that came in yesterday.
They are not friendly by any stretch of the imagination, they have had NO human contact at all, in their short lives.
Now they need names.
One is black & one is tabby & white. About 12 weeks old.
Doesn't matter what letter as they have not come in as "a litter" as such :? although they are litter mates. I mean they are over 9 weeks old & haven't come in with mom.
So we are thinking along the lines of....

itchy & scratchy (simpsons cats apparently)
Thunder & lightning
Flash & lighting ( as that's what they move like)
Havoc & chaos (as one bit a nasty hole in the vets finger)
mischief & trouble
trouble & strife

..... you get the idea! So any thoughts?

When we named Sooty & Sweep recently, we thought about Dick & Dom (as in.... "in da bungalow") anyone without kids will think I'm bonkers at this point
but I have to be careful as their paperwork has to be sent off to an insurance company / CP Head office & the branch, so I thought they would all wonder why I had called a kitten Dick

Well this will be my last set of names I was just off to bed, but will have a think now......:?

How about the opposite Smudgley - you know what they say about "give a dog a bad name...." How about

"Sugar and Spice" ;)
"Ace & Spade"
"Mulder and Scully" if boy and girl.
"Ronnie & Reggie" If boys.

Are they boys or girls?

Karen

Although I do like Itchy and Scratchy. Kinda.

The tabby one is a boy & the black one is a girl. :)

Not an easy task, sexing very angry little kittens. These pair really try & bite as well as scratch. Poor little mites. I have now wormed / treated for fleas & sexed them, therefore I will leave them to chill out now.

What did you decide Smudgley?

smudgley
04-03-2006, 01:52 PM
Yes.:)

I had a thought the other day & wanted to call them Dennis & Mary. One male, one female - always moaning. No reason, just nice names.....
*no it's just a total coinsidense that my mother-in-law & father-in-law are called those names*

But thought I better not as the kids may "tell"

So they are called Havoc & Chaos. They seem ok, but they are true ferals & their mother is very nasty. (she's not with me)

Tabby male is Havoc & black female is chaos.

I hope the smudgley magic touch helps these kittens along to a happy life soon. Welcome Havoc and Chaos! (And I may still steal those names, you know - I love them!)

smudgley

Well I'm not sure these will come round very easily at all.:(

I chatted with a cat behaviourist specialist (Peter Neville) about taming feral kittens & he explained a few things to me, but basically the older they are, the harder they are to tame (as we all know) but if you get past the critical socialisation period with them (ie after about 6/7 weeks in kittens) then it's a real tough job to tame them.

Also I've had kittens that have had no human contact, but that have a tame mother (ie a lost / abandoned cat) these kittens are easier to tame as mother will have had some handling / human contact.

But ferals, that live a very different life who are not tame at all, who have kittens, that also have no human contact & get to the age of Havoc & Chaos (12 weeks) then I think it's a very, very hard job to try & tame them.

But we'll see. They are in a pen in the garage, so they can see a lot of things going on & people buzzing about.

I'm not that experienced at taming them - so we'll see how it goes.:)

Well, at the very least they're cozy and fed and cared for, now... What happens to feral cats if they can't be tamed? Are they PTS?

Sorry to be so frank, but I really have no idea...

Maybe they will get a job on a farm/warehouse, once they've been neutered?

CJK

hope they do tame a little, poor babies. Must have a nicer more cosey life now

I hope so.:)

Or the lady who told us about them is happy to have them back & feed them, so that may be what we end up doing with them. It almost seems cruel to make them go through what is an unnatural process / environment to try & make them like humans. I feel it will take months, & it seems more sensible to neuter & put back & let them enjoy their kittenhood.
Early days yet, we'll see what happens.

dinahsmum
04-03-2006, 02:14 PM
mmm hmm, agree. And maybe their B&B with you will help them adjust a little, over time?

Snoof
04-03-2006, 02:30 PM
Ahhhh. Sorry, it hadn't occurred to me that neutering/spaying might be the purpose. I didn't sleep much last night - guess it shows!

Didn't see that post til now sorry Snoof.

No if they are over a certain age - they usually get neutered & put back & there is usually someone there who is happy to carry on feeding them. Or as DM said - a job catching mice in return for food in a stables / farm / warehouse is sometimes a good solution.

I'm much happier for them now smudge - for some reason my only-half-awake head didn't consider possibilities aside from rehoming
