Well I got these new pastels 72 pastels for under £10 so I wanted to have a go at a drawing, looked through the list of catpages members cats to see which one I thought would be suitable, and I chose Natalie's Mitten.

Just roughly putting in some of the darker colouring

http://www.catforum.com/photos/data/500/3440Mitten_001-med.jpg

added most of the white to the body, although it looks cream in this photo!!!

Now it is starting to come together

I still have loads to do, loads more work on the face, tail, feet and fur :-D

I love working in pastels Donna they are so quick, although I am self taught so I just sort of fumble along with them. I cannot wait until I do this pastel workshop in May, I am hoping to learn so much!!! This will be the 3rd proper drawing I have done in pastels I think :)

Mitten so far has taken me about 1.5 hours, about another 1.5 hours and it will be done. I will finish her off during the week, as I need to clarify with Natalie a couple of points before I go too far with it.

EmmaG

I thought you all might like to see a work in progress of the pastels, as they seem to start off looking very odd and when I do them I always think "hmmm not sure this is ever going to come together" and then it does seem to be ok in the end!!! lol

I have got some pencil work here that i will take photo's of and post to show you that i did at college(non animal though) and have other pastel work but at my mums so i'll have to try and find some out when i'm next up. I did a drawing of Frank Bruno in conte crayon which is like white pastel I sold the drawing but have a photo of it on somewhere. I have never bought many pastels only the odd ones as I had loads from school  , I was wondering where you got yours from as If I do some more drawing i'm gonna need some. The pastels i used weren't too hard but weren't soft either. I've never used oil pastels.

Deester, I would love to see more of your work, animals or not :)

The pastels I purchased were a set of 72 Jaxells from a company called Great Art. www.greatart.co.uk (http://www.greatart.co.uk) apparently they are one of the largest Art suppliers in the UK.

EmmaG
01-03-2006, 08:51 AM
Nat I have an idea about the background, I was going to put a very very light shade of grey in close to Mitten and then blend it out to the white, this should mean that the white fur will stand out ok, I am working on this tonight and I will keep you all posted :)

Yes Deester I am very pleased with it, the pastels are very nice, although I do think I get more precise work with the coloured pencils, with the pastels I struggle to get fine details down and I know it is possible. Perhaps the pastel workshop will help a bit ;)
