but what is there for cats that like to scratch at the carpet?

Chloe is gradually de-fluffing my dining room carpet as she likes to be horizontal rather than vertical when doing her nails:-D

They are like boards covered in carpet Donna. I have seen then in Sainsburys and I'm sure all the pet stores would sell them...
....an example.....

Cat Scratch Box

Cardboard has long been recommended as an economical scratcher that trains the cat away from rugs and furniture. The holes in the corrigate allow the cat to sink his claws into the scratcher (instead of the furniture). Catnip treated for cat's quick adaptation and appreciation. Cat tested, cat approved

What about something like this..
