View Full Version : Suspected Siberian!

Rather than hi-jacking Ann's thread any more (sorry Ann!) thought I'd start a new one.

I said here (http://www.catpages.co.uk/talkcats/showpost.php?p=82571&postcount=10) (<<< clicky to post on 'ere with pics) that I suspect that my Amber, rescued from the CPL about 18 months ago might be Siberian and e-mailed a local breeder with the same pics.

She's answered already (how good is she?!) to say that yes, Amber does look Siberian but will not be from her lines as she's only been breeding a year (Amber was estimated at about 3 or 4 years old by CPL). There is another breeder who has red in her cats apparently, I have asked my local breeder for contact details.

If what I thought was just a gorgeous moggy is confirmed as a pedigree, how weird would that be  - but as long as I can keep her, I don't really mind, she's lovely either way :)

Siberians are still so rare over here that I'm fairly sure it'll just be coincidence (but the breeder saying she *does* look Siberian at least means that I don't feel stupid!)

As I said on that other thread, I would have thought that a breeder would microchip kittens and anyone who had paid several hundred quid for a rare kitten would have told the world if she went missing - so the CPL would have known and not rehomed her. She was obviously well socialised as a kit and is good with my nieces and nephew.

But you never know... the woman who the breeder has recommended me to contact is not on the Siberian Cat Club list of registered breeders which is a bit weird. Guess I won't know until tomorrow now, as I haven't got contact details for the breeder I was recommended to contact (not on the website) and will have to wait for the local breeder to get home and check her e-mail.

If Amber *is* Siberian, then I can throw some light on Ann's original question about the characteristics  - she's a very sociable cat, a real party animal and just loves to be the centre of attention. Despite this, she's quite independent - when she's had enough, she'll take herself off. She does want to be top cat - she has never been one of your shy and retiring types. Relaxed and laid back most of the time, but will sulk if she doesn't get what she wants - me: "no, you're not going out now" Amber: if looks could kill.... me: spends half an hour brushing cat Amber: sits and glares at me with lashing tail (but forgives me fairly quickly). Settled in really quickly after I adopted her - made herself right at home (in fact, the little devil escaped outside on her second day with me EEK - but she came back). Tends to be a bit lazy, but likes to play as well. Very greedy - but that could be because she was a stray and spent some time obviously not knowing where her next meal was coming from.

i was looking into siberian cats last night, theyre very rare indeed in this country arent they. Could it be possible she is a siberian cross???

If I can't get a breeder to recognise her I guess we'll never know.

Like I said in my first post, I don't care either way, I love her whatever!

I am not sure if you're interested in this, and i cant remember who it was looking for a siberian, but this may be a start

It was me, CJK, on account of my allergic friend :) Thanks, I'll pass it on - he's looking into it very seriously, but his girlfriend isn't understanding that they can't get "the ugliest kitten that nobody else want" because of his violent allergies, and that they might not be able to own a cat at all.

Bit like Mr D. siberians arent ugly at all though, but i bet they cost a lot of pennies. Such stunning cats though.

Amber is my first longhair cat and I was surprised at how little brushing she needs to keep her non-tangly - Persians need brushing every day don't they? - I can get away with once a week for Amber at this time of year (just as well, she's getting a bit better about being brushed but I still have to hold her down to do round her little armpits and trousers!)

Sadly, her tail has been broken at some stage and mended badly :( - doesn't seem to cause her any problems, but I have to be really really careful when brushing around there.

The kitten on the right of this pic made me do a double-take

Amber:

Although my local breeder has said Amber would definitely not be one of hers, if I can't find out anything futher, I'm tempted to ask her if we can visit so she can see the cat "in the flesh" and maybe give me some idea of who else I can follow up with.

She is absolutely gorgeous. She reminds me of the Norwegian Forest, another beautiful semi-longhaired cat. Keep us informed about your progress in tracing her heritage.

she is a nice cat and i dont want to put a downer on things but she could just be a cross of a few cat breeds like u said siberians are rear here,

like Kay says she does have a look of Norwegian Forest cat/Maine coon Somali or Turkish Van about her. my friend has 2 young kittens and they look so much like maine coons it would shock u to know that they are 100% crosses

if u get this months your cat (february) there is a read up of siberians

there is also a breed club if you pm me i will give u the phone numbers (there is no email address sorry)

Amber is my first longhair cat and I was surprised at how little brushing she needs to keep her non-tangly

there are a few breeds that need every little coat care that are semi-long hair like the 4 breeds i have already said about. i give mine a good brush every week and thats all over but i do brush there tails a little more

Mr D gets combed every 2-3 days but being a knid onf short hair he doesnt need it. He has longer hair than the 2 DSh, who get combed once a week.
The bunnies get done too!
