Morgan
Burt
Boris :)

Thought of Boris when I was going through 'famous gingers' - Boris Becker. On the same train of thought Kinnock scored high for irony but prob not for loveability. There's Evans and Davies, for Chris and Steve (interesting) and Baker for Ginger Baker from Cream but that's almost prehistoric  . Meant to look up the latin for ginger. I'll go off and google that now and will edit it in shortly!

All these names mean "red":-

Radburn
Radcliffe
Raleigh
Rogan (actually means "red-haired"!!)
Rory
Rowan
Roy
Rudyard
Rufus
Russell (also means red-hared)

And off at a tangent a bit there is Ross which is actually the male version of Rose.

I will keep looking through my baby names book.

Kay.

From Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats (T S Eliot)

The naming of cats

The Naming of Cats is a difficult matter,
It isn't just one of your holiday games;
You may think at first I'm as mad as a hatter
When I tell you, a cat must have THREE DIFFERENT NAMES.
First of all, there's the name that the family use daily,
Such as Peter, Augustus, Alonzo or James,
Such as Victor or Jonathan, George or Bill Bailey--
All of them sensible everyday names.
There are fancier names if you think they sound sweeter,
Some for the gentlemen, some for the dames:
Such as Plato, Admetus, Electra, Demeter--
But all of them sensible everyday names.
But I tell you, a cat needs a name that's particular,
A name that's peculiar, and more dignified,
Else how can he keep up his tail perpendicular,
Or spread out his whiskers, or cherish his pride?
Of names of this kind, I can give you a quorum,
Such as Munkustrap, Quaxo, or Coricopat,
Such as Bombalurina, or else Jellylorum-
Names that never belong to more than one cat.
But above and beyond there's still one name left over,
And that is the name that you never will guess;
The name that no human research can discover--
But THE CAT HIMSELF KNOWS, and will never confess.
When you notice a cat in profound meditation,
The reason, I tell you, is always the same:
His mind is engaged in a rapt contemplation
Of the thought, of the thought, of the thought of his name:
His ineffable effable
Effanineffable
Deep and inscrutable singular Name.

Don't know about THREE DIFFERENT NAMES, DM is having a hard enough job picking one each.

As soon as she see's them she'll know their names; cats choose their own.

Cleo looked like a Cleo from the first moment I saw her - :D never considered the name before.

Oscar's name just came to me the day after I got them. He spent the first day being called Harry but it did not suit him at all. Oscar was him to a tee.:D

Only Molly has kept her name (she'd already lost two homes and her friend, couldn't take her name off her as well). Jenny got her name within 24 hours, Snowy even before I took her home from the shelter, Amber took a bit longer (and was nearly Amaretto  )

Quite right - you have to take care with names and often the first one doesn't stick!
Or they need more than one
I told you that my daughters vet was confused and thought she may have 5 cats (she has 2!) because there were so many names:lol:

Kazz

Loved the Lion in Narnia

Yes he's lovely isn't he. I'm trying to convince my 11 year old Kyle that he would much prefer to see Narnia than King Kong. Not working at the mo, though.:( :( :(

ooh Alsan would be fab for a Ginger cat!

The kitten we are adopting is temporarily called smudge by the owners but its not our kind of name so I looked up a cat naming website and on the first page of A's was Alfie and it just suited him to perfection with his unusual markings.

Oliver was sparky, the name the breeder gave him, but he was such a little boy, and always looking for food, Oliver was perfect for him...Although we do call him Wally! quite a lot.....

Thought I'd resurrect this one for the new year!
I've just thought up a great name for a ginger cat -
Redfurr (like Robert Redfurr, the actor:lol: )
What do you think?

There is a real male name - Redvers - isn't there? I must have a look and see if that has a nice meaning, not that that matters too much.

The one which was born 26 Jan has been sold :( but if a very local queen and stud have 'clicked', and if there are resulting boys, there will be cream, or more likely red, bsh in April. Now shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, don't say a word! I'll tell you in good time.

Fingers crossed here too! So far the names that have clicked with me are Maxwell, Oliver & Rowan. And yes, in my experience ginger toms are always large & dignified...my first cat my parents let me name, and as he was a wee frisky kitten, got named Scamper...disaster!!:-D He lived with that ridiculous name for 18 years!!

Admiral Akhbar is a character from the original Star Wars trilogy...

dandysmom

Maybe that's who he was named after; didn't know as I have never watched Star Wars. Somewhere in the back of my mind is something about India in the pre-Raj days; haven't gotten around to checking it yet. I've never been very original at naming cats, so am really enjoying reading you all's inventiveness:D !!

I did finally check out Akbar, and he was a very famous Mughul emperor of India in the 16th century, about co-terminous with Elizabeth I. Good name, but I still like Maxwell!
