We have always had 2 dogs, and 2 cats....
My hubby is away all week, just comes home at weekends, and my son comes home now and then, so he let me have another dog to keep me out of mischief...
As we live right out in the country, there are wide open spaces for the dogs to runaround....The cats are another story!!!

Does anyone know the real facts about multiple cat households and the risk of feline leukaemia and feline AIDS? I thought there was a significantly higher risk in multi-cat households but prehaps that's just an old wives' tale?

I don't have facts and figures DM but yes there is supposidly a higher risk with all the diseases in this respect within a multi-cat household, suppose it is obvious really. I have had a multi-cat household for approx 20 years and have never ever had a problem. All my cats are vaccinated including the Leukaemia vaccine for the first few years of their lives and I suppose this helps. I think problems may occur when no cats are vaccinated in the household and one of them comes into contact with something nasty, it could soon spread throught the household??

Maybe Smudgley might have some facts and figures??

Mmm, thanks.
I ask because my sister lost her entire 'flock' of five to leukaemia but that was a good many years ago. Your vaccination policy sounds sensible.

That is really sad DM :( I once adopted a cat that within a few days became ill. He was diagnosed as suffering with Feline Infectious Peritonitis :( I had to have the little fellow put to sleep :( and then panicked that my other 5 cats were going to get ill too. All of them were perfectly fine thank goodness but like I say they all have several years of vaccinations and I didn't have any particularly old or young ones at the time who would obviously have been more vunerable...

My cats had their leukaemia jabs as well, the vet recommended it when you have a mutlti cat household...............

I have decided to get the kitties their booster jabs probably in January. Chloe's is due now, but Misty in January I think so will take them both together when Misty's is due!! Squeeze them both into the box!!!:)

I don't know the real facts but it happened to me this year - Tippy Toes was diagnosed with feline leukaemia and died of it I had to have all my cats tested - I was really lucky and she hadn't passed it on to the others - but I think its a high possibility because with the feline leukaemia it is passed on through saliva (bites etc) and sharing litter trays (this is what I was told ) and sharing food bowls which in a multi cat household they all do that.

I have
1 dog
2 cats (& lots of fosters)
2 bunnies
8 chickens
fish

As for cat diseases - I know several people who have got more than 8 cats & none have had any probs with diseases.

With the rescue cats we routinely B/T them all & it is very, very rare that any are positive to FL or aids. Some of the cats tested are from colonies of ferals living outside.
I think if sensible hygiene is adhered to - & regular imunisation is given, the risk is minimal regardless of how many cats are in the house.:)

I've got 5 cats and I think the risk depends on whether you let them out or not.
We had a cat run constructed last year which gives them secure outside space but no chance of mixing with the neighbours.

We've got:
2 dogs
2 cats
2 rabbits
and until recentlly a G-Pig
the most pets weve ever had was....4 dogs, 3 cats, 4 ferrets, 2 gpigs, 3 indian runner ducks, a rooster and an african grey parrot.
I think it becomes to many when you feel you cant cope/looka fter the pets :)

I think having to many animals is when you spend to much time cleaning out, feeding etc & not spending any lengthof time with them ....not sure Iv put this over right? :?

smudgley
05-12-2005, 03:09 PM
MBII - I think you have made a very good point, that when you spend more time looking after them, than spending quality time with them - it's time to stand back & look at how many animals you have:)

Well now at this time we have......

(7 cats)

4 adult cats
1 adult foster cat
2 kitten foster cats

I found the owner of the adult foster cat (Oliver) but she said she didnt want him back and to just have him put to sleep...sigh. So I am looking for a home for him as he hates the other cats!

The 2 foster kittys are doing fine and get along with the older cats. We will probably end up keeping them. They were found in New Orleans after the hurricane and nobody has a clue who they belonged to. And nobody has claimed them. One is a 2 mth old male yellow tabby and the other is a 3 mth old black/white male. They had been living together in a shelter cage so are best buddies.

Hi
I have 8 cats, all indoor Persians, 3 dogs (1 x Bull Mastiff, 1 x Border Collie and a Jack Russell), 2 rabbits, a hamster and about 50 Tropical fish, can't count them properly as they won't keep still long enough!!!
I am intending getting another Persian next year and hopefully keeping one from one of my litters. As you may have gathered I breed the Persians and yes I AM MAD!!!!.

I am glad everyone likes my babies unfortunately, for me, they have all gone to their new homes now, the kittens that is not the adults!! I have been breeding and showing for only four years so still fairly new to it. I hate having to let them go but I have made so great friends through the new owners and I am still in touch with everyone of them.
