Believe me, cross stitch is quite easy, although this did take me about a year to complete, off and on that is... :)

This has pride of place in my bedroom :)

Hey good idea... I think she would like a cross stitch picture, not sure about the drawings, they don't have any pets that I could draw and I am not too sure about drawing anything else!!! lol

How does x-stitching work then? Is it to a template over which you apply the stitches or is it effectively freehand?

Yola you have a plan of the pattern marked out on paper, with codes for different colours. The material you use (Aida) is just plain with nothing on it at all. Usually you start in the middle (material and plan) as soon as you have your first stitch down you then work from the pattern. The pattern is just loads and loads of little boxes with codes in them. It is quite easy to do and if you get it wrong you just unpick it ;)
