Regional dialects and speech

Frans post about 'nesh' cats got me laughing and thinking. Strange how words that seem so commonplace to us would seem very strange to someone who lives 100 miles away. What weird and wonderful expression are from round your way?

Since I'm from Glasgow, I thought I'd start of with this one for you.....

Hows it gaun doll, Ah'm pure dead brilliant by the way!

And for Elaine in Aberdeen.....
Fit like Quinie?

Re: Regional dialects and speech

I'm familiar with that one Fran - get yer kegs off was a favourite cry of ours to any half-handsome lad after a few bevvies in my younger days !!

When I was in Stourbridge, there was a lad from the black country ('burbs of Wolverhampton I think), and he used to say 'bosting' when he thought something was good.

My friend from the lake district used to always say 'ay . . . appen' for maybe or perhaps.

George Orwell was an observers of accents, dialects etc. Also there was a radio programme (R4) presented by Melvyn Bragg which travelled the country and dealt with lost or close-to-lost wording, phraseology or language that has evolved from the jobs people do. http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/routesofenglish/

I find this really intriguing. I love languages! I met one of Hippie's old friends a little while ago, and he remarked later that the only accent he could hear in my speech was a slight hint of Scottish

English is my third language, since I turned 18 I've lived in America (3 years in Wisconsin), Scotland (18 months ish across the bridge from Edinburgh), Lancaster (18 months) and now the Bolton/Manchester area... With a Yorkshireman!

There are some words, like "grody" (gross) that Hippie will notice and ask me about, and I'll have no idea where I picked it up

But I merrily pilfer expressions I like and wander along through life throwing them all at unsuspecting strangers who expect me to just be from the area

I like accents too. Can't fathom a strong geordie one, or a borderer, enjoy the 'musicality' of a welsh one and of course I am very fond of the softness of the westcountry burr.
And regional words are lovely. I hope they don't all get lost in the 'yo' culture, innit?

I did wonder about 'Nesh' - never heard of it!! What does it mean?

I am a Londoner, when we moved here I came across somewords I'd never heard before. Cobs = rolls, Mardy = strop, bad mood.
