A Day in Montenegro

The Bay of Kotor is recognised as one of the most beautiful bays in the world. It is made up from four straits that are connected.

We took a boat out to a man-made islet which had just enough room for one building - the Church of Our Lady of the Rock. It was built in 1630 by grateful sailors who survived the storms and horrors of open sailing.

The interior of the tiny church is floor to ceiling in trinkets that sailors either made or purchased in their journeys. They thought that bringing something back would protect them on the open sea.

There is a small museum in a room next to the church which is filled with paintings and drawings of storms tossing boats around in the rough sea.

They still carry out about one wedding a year in this beautiful little church..

Old Town Kotor

Enormous bulwarks guard the Old City of Kotor. Kotor is known for being the best preserved medieval town in the Mediterranean, The architecture features many cathedrals, churches, museums and palaces. The streets are narrow and wind around the city like a maze ....... we lost our way several times!!

The surrounding mountains make a lovely backdrop for the beautifully situated medieval buildings.

The old walls meander down the mountain.......

Amazing!! It is certainly somewhere I would never have considered for a holiday, but seeing these pics makes me think it would definitely be worthwhile

Thanks for your comments

There are mostly pebble beaches in Croatia but as I'm no a beach lover, it doesn't bother me. I would sooner be out and about learning something about the country than spending hours laying on a beach

Lovely!

We flew back (from Crete I think) on a day flight one time and had the most wonderful view of the hundreds of islands of all sizes all along the Croatian coast. It looked just beautiful
