Morgan sends his sympathy, we have to have him trimmed every 8 weeks. Do you take Monty back to the breeder for trimming? These dogs are too darned good at gathering half the woods in their coats aren't they? He'll be a lot easier to groom now, smart-looking little boy!
We can't take him to his breeder who lives not far from Brighton - he goes to a groomer nearby, next to the vet we use. I was sad at the thought of all the effort he'd put into growing his coat, which was thickening nicely for the winter and he did feel just like wool.

I am a member of a Schnauzer forum and mainly it seems that owners of dogs or bitches that are to be shown hand strip, the majority are clipped.

You could learn to hand strip yourself Angie - it's easy once you know how & better for their coat. He does look super cute xx

Clipping destroys the true texture and the texture the coat should be, It will be completely non waterproof. Hand stripping is easy enough to learn, plus groomers do it too.

Is That The Same For Border Terriers??? I Last Got Jack Done By A Groomer Who Used Clippers.was Way Quicker And Cheaper £25
The Previous Groomer Who Hand Stripped Him I Think,he Was Away For Bout 3 Hrs Cost £40,but The Recent Groomer Took Under An Hour

Theres a world of difference between a clip & strip. I used to do other folks dogs (when showing) for nothing - i was quite popular

Gosh - I bet you were and I wish you lived nearer to me!

Here's a query from an ignoramus - why does hand stripping keep the waterproof quality of the coat where clipping doesn't?

He looks good either way Angie, interesting about the hand stripping, i didn't realise there was a difference. Thank goodness we don't need to bother about clipping etc

I think Angie (far from expert here) that because the schnauzer has a double coat, waterproof top, soft under; the top grows out and dies and the undercoat carries on growing leaving that "puffed out look" clipping leaves the roots of the dead hairs behind and this will affect the growth of the new hairs, causing the coat to loose it texture and become softer.
Not sure I could tell the difference and to me Monty looks really smart.

Yep - short coats anyday - enjoyed all the work in my younger days, now quick rub with chamoi leather couple times a week & daily brush in shedding season & every few days brush other times - makes life lOt easier

To be fair i had peep come to me because the groomer wouldnt strip the dog/s as it was too time consumming....
