"alee" comes up often in crosswords here, defined as the sheltered side. That's the only reason I knew it.

That was me on a school cruise in 1968 ......... Bay of Biscay, even the sailors were sick, but not me! But coming back from France, mirror calm sea, I definitely felt queasy!!!
